Will you buy the New V1 & J1???

Will you buy the V1 or J1?

I have my J1, I have a 5D II so was after something alot smaller. IQ is surprisingly good, especially when considering the size of the camera.
I have been able to print 120cm wide prints in 3:2 from the J1 and the quality is remarkable. I'd put it up there with some prints I made from the Oly Pen EP2.
Workflow does involve OnOne Perfect resize, but of course, the better the raw file's sharpness the more likelihood of a nice print.
All I need is a 50mm equivalent for the Nikon 1, Ideally brighter than 2.8.

Hi, I also have the J1 and was trying to take some night shots of the stars and the moon, but was unable to capture and images which were significantly better than my previous p&s camera.

Do you know what setting I should change to? I tried switching to shutter priority mode, but didn't see any discernible difference from full auto mode.

Try putting it on a tripod, set shutter speed of maybe 2 seconds and timer of say 2 seconds. Then press the shutter release and 2 seconds later the shutter should open for 2 seconds and close. You should get better results. Experiment with the shutter speed until you get what you want :)

Tried V1 at the it show, slow focus turned me off.
Love the hybrid viewfinder. Settled for d7000 instead.

I am feeling guilty that I did not pick up the V1 at the store, instead I pick up the EP3.
I had done many research, and I know that despite the smaller sensor, it's image quality is close to those m4/3 cameras out there.

But I am just disappointed with the lens available for Nikon 1. I may need to wait till end of the year before I can see more lens from Nikon. But right now, after getting my EP3, I immediately pick up a lumix 20mm f1.7 lens from a friend and start to enjoy street photography again. I plan to get the olympus 12mm f2.0 soon, and also maybe the pancake zoom lens from panasonic. I am spoiled for choice.

Oh ya, I did explore the use of FT1 with my current Nikon F-mount lens, but what is 50mm on a 2.7 crop factor? You can do the maths. Not practical to have a compact camera with big DSLR lens on and expensive adaptor. I will rather stick with my D7k.

Anyway, if Nikon decides to make more attractive lens like those from oly or pana, I will definitely but the V1.
Oh, and please keep the lens small and bright.

You should just keep your point and shoot, its not the camera problem, it is just a lack of knowledge to capture the photo.
A newer or better camera cannot and will not allow you to take better photos, it just make the work easier, but you still need to tell it what to do or what you want the final results to look like. My advice for you is to read more from the web, not in clubsnap, elsewhere go google and type "basic photography", you will find many great tutorial or you can search Youtube as well.

I know clubsnap members are helpful, and will tell you what setting to use, and so on, but do you know why you should do that? It is always better to learn to fish yourself. But nevertheless, the other most important thing about photography is to carry your camera with you everyday, and shoot a lot of photos and learn from mistakes.

Cheers, enjoy your new camera.

How do I set the shutter speed on the J1?

The little booklet that comes with the camera is called a manual. It tells you how to do things like this. Read the fine manual?

And by the way, you're welcome.

I did in my previous message. But expecting others to spoon feed things that are already in the manual is a bit too much.

If u have the time to type this, I reckon u can make use of that time to guide him?

Sure I could, but I won't. Learning to RTFM is a valuable skill. And if you read my earlier posting I did help him out a bit.

Besides I don't own a J1.

On the other hand, you're most welcome to help him.

Sounds like a long process to change shutter speed, I just need to turn the dial on the back of my E-P3... less than 1 sec job.
Btw, Nikon have built this camera for point & shoot user in mind, they don't want the user to change shutter speed or anything else, the user just need to frame and press the shutter button.

And one more thing, I think what pbear1973 did was right, he have already guided the new comer by telling him to look for the answer in the operating manual.

Hey! How did this topic come back up! I totally forgot about my question here! :D

But yeh, thanks for your encouragement, too many smart ar5es here on clubsnap, not very helpful.

Stay happy with your EP3 - it's a good camera - but to change the shutter speed is a 1/10 of a second job - to toggle that switch!

And no, I find with the J1 - if you leave it in automode - you will be disappointed - but playing with aperture priority and shutter speed, results improve dramatically (as to be expected I guess!)

Thanks for that! I also learnt the value of the ISO variable in low light situations - helps a lot!

Yeh, thanks and no thanks!

I'd respect your opinion a bit more, but then I saw your link to "Stuff I'm reasonably proud of: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ctky1973/"

Really? I'm no expert, but I got an eye for stuff that's good - and really, it just looks like you're a beginner with expensive equipment.

You'd do well to attend some classes - or at least look at other portfolios to see how they frame a shot or isolate subjects - using the monochrome function in your camera does not make a shot arty farty.

And by the way, YOU'RE welcome!

If you do not find the answer useful, you can choose to
- ignore and move on
- express your feeling

but this is personal attack....... after 5 months later.

Is the V1 is still a smart choice after 1 year or will there be a successor very soon? First I thought I might go for the J2 but the short battery running time is holding me back, I would probably need about 4 on a trip.

Price for a V1 is really really good nowadays.. 800+ for V1 + 10mm.
