Enjoy.

buy buy buy time man!!! 10 > 12 MP no big difference for me. :) But original battery grip looks nice :P

IMO, the battery life seems kinda bad for a semi-pro DSLR. Even lower than A200.
No LiveViwer, which might be useful for low angle shots.
Pricewise still on the high side, especially for Singapore.
Lack of Lens selection.

wah, this thread started in sept'07, now comparing it to a200?
must compare later will a900 also then..

may I know what is a good battery life to your standard?
So far from this (review), it seems that a700 isn't really at the bottom for battery performance.

Liveview wasn't a common thing then, in anycase, with such high resolution on the LCD, i doubt having a liveview will be beneficial to battery life.

pricewise.. spore's sony price is a tad too high.. :)

lack of lens selection.. what do you mean? :dunno:
which lens do you need that isn't around in KM/Sony selection?

Most of the batt life will be used up if u keep viewing ur pics.. the lcd itself has a resolution of coming to 1mpx ..far more than any other dslr ,,.,

Looks like somebody revived an old thread just to slam the camera eh?

Battery life, as per what dewakarma said...if you use the (VGA) LCD to keep reviewing photos, of course batt life will be shortened, but the VGA LCD comes in very useful for me to check if the photos are focused properly @ 100% everytime.

Low angle shots without a tiltable liveview screen has limited capabilities as well.

There is a reduction of the price of the camera recently.

What lens you need? If you asked around this forum, most of us have the lens we need (:

in the end, the a700 is not the perfect cam, but it's still pretty awesome for what it provides (:

Not here to slam the A700, but just listing what I think abt the camera.

Live View without an articulating screen doesn't improve the situation as much as the implementations of the a300, a350 or olympus designs can offer - those IMHO are more helpful - Especially if there's not enough room to orient the user's head to view the screen - in this case, an articulating screen or an angle finder would be more useful.

Battery life in typical usage for me varies - a700's rated battery life on paper is quite sad compared to D300, but not too bad after all in real world usage:

Last saturday, I started from 10am and ended my day @ 2am, shot about 10 gigs of stuff, plus viewing, with around 30% of juice left in my NP-FM500H. There are some shoots where I've fired off 700 shots and still have 50% juice left.

So I can say, battery life is quite okay for me. No significant impact to my shooting practices despite the poorer battery performance after I changed from the a100.

As for prices, I think Singapore is quite bad (Cutting Carrot Heads), though improving, the a700 was quoted at 1540 + 4GB cf card, getting close to what 40D is selling right now. :) Prices are much better in HK - as cheap or sometimes cheaper.

Selection - actually big with tons of great and uniquely (24mm VFC ,135STF, 500F8 AF Reflex still remain unprecedented – and unsurpassed) KM lenses and the numbers have been increasing. It's been an exciting year for Sony, with a lot of very powerful lens designs being released. Support from third party manufacturer's been increasing. So no problem getting cheap and good lenses for A-mount... except... that I've heard that Sony lenses keep getting out of stock here and in HK...

a700 battery life test ......

3000 shots with LCD review, how many more do you want ? :)

Hi Boombox, thx for sharing your experience on the A700.
I'm not opposing Sony, I almost bought the A700 when I was at HK.
But was dissapointed when read on Paper that the CIPA battery test for the A700 was only 650 shots.
Didn't know it would fire 3000 shots on a single battery.
I'll wait for A900 to see what it delivers!

As usual, these reports are not 100% accurate and more so if they are for a 'not so popular' brand.

650 shots is a lot...

As for limited lens selection, there are over 250+ compatible lenses, Do you really need that many?

Think this thread has served it purpose (nong nong ago..:bsmilie:).. hence I am closing it...

Has been almost 1 year since the A700 came out and i am pretty sure most bros, me inclusive, have been very satisfied with this camera.. Nothing to complain about the battery life... really can last quite long in actual life... If only the prices of Sony lenses and cameras are comparable to overseas prices.:bsmilie:
