Will KPT kena?

all the cats have shown up...

I don't think it is a crack down.

The bigger picture behind this, is the tussle between:

Established news organisations with reporters/editors with journalistic principles to follow

against

Social media where anyone & everyone says his opinion in a blog sometimes without solid research and also without the responsibility of representing a major newspaper

Established news organisations with reporters/editors with journalistic principles to follow

does Yahoo! News Singapore count as one of these? :bsmilie:

I think its disguised censorship.. of course there are issues like irresponsible journalism, FUD, etc
But is censorship the right approach to this? How about educating the people to distinguish and interpret the news.
This is a very short sighted, short term solution

Btw I like yahoo news sg :bsmilie:

not sure if Media Suppression Authority or Development Authority.

we should have had a major overhaul in 2011

If you read carefully, you will know blogs and social media is not even covered by this ruling. I think you missed the big picture totally.

The MDA also responded to socio-political website The Online Citizen’s (TOC) claim that its current reach meets the licensing criteria, citing its internal data. “TOC does not currently fall within the online licensing framework. Should MDA determine later that they ought to be individually licensed, they will be notified,” the MDA spokesman said.

In other words, now no does not mean future no. Up to MDA to decide.

And your point is?

Just to point out that saying that something can be done and hinting that it could be done later on actually doesn't say anything.

For example, I can jump off a building right now, and I can decide on that later on. Does it mean that I'm suicidal?

The more suitable example is that we already know you are suicidal.. thus allowing you to jump off buildings is a bad idea.
Good rule of law is a set of rules that have well defined boundaries.

the rule of law is abridged when the government attempts to punish someone for violating a vague or poorly worded law. Ill-defined laws confer too much discretion upon government officials who are charged with the responsibility of prosecuting individuals for criminal wrongdoing.

Don't be lidat lah. When ppl dun change the rule,e.g caning, it's called draconian. Of course MDA dun wan this rule also called draconian rite? ;p

Another theory.. maybe the minister just found out MDA people have nothing to do in office, so he drafted this scheme for them to monitor
At least now they can read yahoo news sg all day and don't have to come up with an excuse :bsmilie:

Mr. Brown has sought clarification. See his website.

The MDA said the new regulation did not apply to blogs, though adding: "If they take on the nature of news sites, we will take a closer look and evaluate them accordingly."

If your online media/facebook page/blog/(and whatever you want to call it), etc... fits the two conditions:

...... if they (i) report an average of at least one article per week on Singapore’s news and current affairs over a period of two months, and (ii) are visited by at least 50,000 unique IP addresses from Singapore each month over a period of two months.

it will invite a closer look and be evaluated accordingly.

Having said that, I still think it is OK and feel that there is nothing sinister about it.

I hope not. Yahoo.sg saved me more than 20 bucks a month so that I may have a prata kosong every morning before work. And if I save up that prata money for 2 months, I could go alone for a ride on Flyer with some spare change!

we should have had a major overhaul in 2011

Once you see this, you will be more acquainted with MDA Style ..

Reporting on STI Index = reporting on Singapore news???

In BBC.

Why the Yacob so agitated in the beginning when speaking to the BBC female reporter is it 'cos Ms. Sharanjit Leyl mentioned the 149 magic figure?

This new rule is not aimed at large established foreign media organisations like BBC or CNN, with their own colossal journalistic resources; and who would already be licensed if it was necessary.

It is aimed at the small currently unlicensed media websites that:
(i) report an average of at least one article per week on Singapore’s news and current affairs over a period of two months, and (ii) are visited by at least 50,000 unique IP addresses from Singapore each month over a period of two months.

Oppression of information again...
if cannot shut down the alternative websites
must shut them up...

Finland is an excellent example of high trust in public institutions and where press freedom is high. They are not mutually exclusive.

Wise man tell me:
"If you don't stink
you won't need so much perfume"

if you wear too much perfume, you'd stink too :bsmilie:

anyway, i support the idea.

most of the so-called "media outlets" post nothing but rubbish.

take Stomp! or TRS, TRE and TOC for example. nothing but assumptions, mostly inacurate drivel that stirs hatred and dissent.
