Will I damage my DSLR if I bring it into Snow city. -9C

for my 5d2, I noticed batt life affected abt 20% at zero-negative 10, not too bad. Just bring a spare batt n charge both batts full before u go :)

Keep spare battery in one of the pockets of the clothes you're wearing. This way it's warm when you're ready to use it.

I have brought in from -6 heavy snow to 20 plus warm room, condensation and all. The whole camera was also caked in snow which I had to blow off every minute.

Did so repeatedly for 2 days. Nothing went wrong. Only irritating thing was the battery life.

Not guaranteeing that yours will be fine, I can only share my experiences.

Hmm maybe we should also post our camera model with our experiences also, Because maybe weather sealing or not affects if it can be used.

I myself am wondering if I bring my 500D to a colder country during winter, would it be damaged?

Alright, if it helps, mine was 40D with EFS 17-55 mm. Again, it worked for me, no guarantees for your side. :)

Attached is an idea of the snow conditions, it was actually much worse at other times.

Hmm thats comforting, because I think the 40D doesn’t have full fledge weather sealing. So maybe canon cameras are more hardy then I give them credit for...

x2. Very tough indeed. 17-55 also not weather sealed right?

What did u do after that to prevent condensation?

Erm, I just try to blow the snow off the surface as much as I can, before stepping into a warm room (heated for skiers and snowboarders).

I didnt have/use a ziploc bag to put it in as suggested in some posts.Of course, there were immediate condensation on the front element and viewfinder.

I guess it might appear a bit rash to some for taking such a chance.

Hi All.. glad i came across this post by chance.. will be gog Korea next week.. gog Yongphong Ski Resort too.. wanted to bring my 50D wit 70-300mm DO lens and 450D wit 17-50mm lens wit me.. so in summary it shd b ok to bring the cam over since i thk the temp indoor and out wont differ much (nw is very cold over there) so condensation wont b much of a problem? only have to worry abt batt life?? Any other tips to protect the cam etc??? Thanks!

Most likely the indoor areas are heated, so without doing anything, there will definitely be condensation if you bring your camera indoors.
For extensive discussion on "protection", go to the Newbies Forum and type in the search word "winter".

Once your camera is wet (from melted snow etc) it is actually bad to put it inside ziploc bag before going indoor. This is because condensation will form anyway since there are moisture inside the bag, and there is no way for them to evaporate because the ziploc bag is sealed.
