[wildcat] Urbanity

Haha thanks, you're too kind. For me, a lot of things are learnt without going out.
1. Books, magazines, internet - started borrowing books, then building own collection

2. Checking out the good photos from forum and trying to learn from them how they did it. Some of the really good and helpful forumers include night86mare, Kit, J-chan, Danny Santos, to name a few when I started. Later I started stalking the APAD, then Streets and Landscape forums, expanding list of photographers to soulFLY, riotvan, Leong23, Draken413o, tungtong... a lot more people. Lately there are a group of photographers who came in later than me who are even better than me and I started stalking their photo threads too.

3. Build a group of peers to continuously improve. r00kie is my twinnie coz in my earlier days, we found out our styles are quite the same (we'd get left behind trying to keep catching up in groups, or put our tripods scarily close to edges, etc) and then went out for more outings and build up group of common friends like Kit, those in SunChasers group like NNB, ZCA, CT, etc.

4. Take your time. Don't try to learn everything at the same time. Find one shortcoming, working on it, master till you're satisfied, then move on. e.g. I first learnt to shoot to ensure my horizons are straight, then later vertically correct perspectives, then even later horizontally correct perspectives (I only did about 3 horizontally correction for photos but at least I know I can). There's tonnes of writeups in Clubsnap written by photographers like night86mare, daredevil123, Kit.

5. Don't feel shy to put up your own photos. This is where I learnt the most and other newbies who put up their photos. Have your own photos put up for critique and criticism not necessarily in Critique section - just here in Landscape, and you can see there's a lot of people offering their advise. Criticism about how bad your photos is best coz you learn most from these, but good praise also lets you know you're moving in the right direction - I don't mind giving lots of good praises but I generally reserve criticism until I'm more adept. If I have a particular criticism of a photo, I keep that to myself and if a number of people whom I trust can give good advise also think the same, then I know I'm on the right track and after a while, I find I can start giving off bit of criticism.

You need to differentiate between good advise and bad advise, not everyone telling your photo is wrong, is right, and neither is everyone telling your photo is good, is right either. But evaluate all criticism coz there's an element of truth even for bad advise.

All the best! Yeah, sure, we can go out shooting one of these days. I normally head out with r00kie (when he's not working), Kit's archi and Sun Chasers outings, other Sun Chasers like NNB looking for new shoot locations, some who stay near me like Prime and Kurniled, some non-CS friends... keep your options open ;)

Really thanks for share your ex to me. Yes, me now still learnt to shoot to ensure my horizons are straight, and learning how to apply the 2Y & 1H and some more to coming do learnt.

2Y & 1H is why am i taking this, what do i want to show, how does the viewer see it.
I will always keep shooting till i know more.

At some point, I figure I have to move out of
view-from-Esplanade CBD area... but not
today. Drizzling thus entire sky was filled with
clouds, making it look cloudless actually.

i kinda like this bro.. think i will head down for a shoot on wed evening to get the blue:devil:

Thanks bro. I think no more visa for me this week for evening shoots :bsmilie:
No visa for next weekend morning also, receiving goods on Sat but I think evening can shoot :vhappy:
I still have a lot of purple skies on auto WB. Then got later shots for deep blues also! Woot.. process later (after I finish throwing at least 20 more rubbish bags)

I kinda like this shot too much to dump it,
despite a blemish on the right side. Not sure
if a boat or something moved across it or
just rain water (was drizzling), which kinda
left the entire sky filled with just a single layer
of uniform cloud (looking like cloudless).

Note to NNB: yes, the blue is AS SHOT.

wah lau don't like that leh.. I am low profile!

I wouldn't have noticed the "blemish" if you had not mentioned it. Yeah, i think it's a droplet of water. I had to dump and entire series due to water droplets too recently. Probably on the same day you shot your image as well. I like the way the buildings come out very crisp against the blue background. Makes me want to go PP a blue background too! I think i'll go do that. ;)

For #75 actually I didn't make any changes to the general colour of the entire pic (no S curve, hue, contrast, etc), other than when I converted from RAW, I increased the colour saturation by 10% using ViewNX (almost forgot I did that). Unlike #73 where I added a vignetting PP, this was direct from cam.

In fact most of the PP was on the bottom half of the pic (smoothening and straightening) and bit of pinlight sharpening for the top to bring out the lighting :)

Caught this at the right timing, but unfortunately
the additional lights (presumably for YOG or NatDay)
didn't last long. The "yellow" spot light had shorter
exposure as it went off after about 20secs but total
exposure for this pic was a minute.

Wonderful shot bro! Spot on exposure

I do find the composition too heavy on the left though, maybe due to the space between 2nd building from right and extreme right building. But its just my eyes ya... ;)

Thanks for the feedback. Will take note of the weightage issue, and relook at it again ;) however when I took the pic (no cropping for this) I did intentionally include everything that was in the pic with balance in mind.

I assume #75 has the same problem? (that one was cropped at the bottom, wasted empty space)

this last few photos are getting really good.

The marina bay cityscape is fast becoming shoot to "death"... yet you can still find new interesting angle... good job.

Since someone mention about your #76 and #75 are too left heavy. Personally, I find that it looks ok.:)
However, you might want to try this next time. Positioning the tallest right most building along the line of thirds may improve somewhat. Anyway I don't really know until trying it out.:dunno:

Thanks, bro. 1/3 from top or from right? From the right, correct? OK, maybe I share my choice for this and can discuss more on this.

I chose this angle because, knowing the space I have on the left and how it's left heavy, I tried to balance by having that amount of space beyond that last right shortie building. Was contemplating whether go closer (i.e. cut out the shortie building) but I needed something to hold the right side down and I felt that building plus the bridge was enough to do so. Without the shortie building, I think it would be even more left heavy.

I also planned for the shot to be for without crop, and I kinda like the space to the top of the pic. It was (I checked) at full wide 10mm lens (which is equiv to 15mm).

I think this one maybe need Kit or someone more experienced to comment, but now that I think about it, I seem to remember I tried a similar angle like this before (cannot find the link now - should be part of Kit's outing threads).

Found in other album
Traced by date but cannot find in Kit's ACP thread :dunno:

But that pic, I stopped at the clock tower and used that for the right balance.

Tried with brighter exposure. Size does matter.
Have to display above a certain size before the details will show.
Maybe it's my post-processing?
Anyway thanks to Kit for reminder to go back to the basics -
"details" ;)
