The high gain antenna does increase the coverage by about 1.5x. Have been using it with my Linksys router.

There isn't much impact on whatever you do on the receiving end. You can install a satellite dish on your laptop, but if the router signal is weak, you still get no improvements. I suggest you listen to the guys above and get a signal booster for the ROUTER.Wolfgang said:Truth be told, i rather not do anything to my own router. :embrass:
In fact, it was my cousin who asked me to help him find out if there is anything out there that helps boost the receiving ability of his laptop you see...
Minimalis said:Be careful, this range expander does not work with Macintosh. I did buy one to try, while the PC receives the signal (with WEP) fine, my Mac couldn't connect at all.
The high gain antenna is abt $60+, a much better choice, IMHO.

Just to check, do you know how much this product would cost @ SLS? :dunno:

Just a long shot: Are you running a Linksys WRT54G older version (say v4 or older?)
If yes, there's a simple way to boost your signal by changing the OS on your WRT54G to an open source firmware, DD-WRT, and then increasing the default signal strength (28mW)to about 100mW (can go higher but usually not recommended due to heat, esp. in our climate). Make sure you place the router in a well ventilated area. This is a cheap solution short of using better antennae. The signal boost might just be enough to give him a reliable connection.
The other thing to do is to use another router to act as a relay to his laptop.
You can read about DD-WRT here.
There are versions of DD-WRT that can be installed on other routers as well. Read the wiki carefully though.
New versions of the venerable WRT54G require a more complicated process to use the open source firmware

Wolfgang said:Ok... I reckon that could be worth considering.

I got the free Cable Gateway + PC Card wireless G package from Starhub for renewing my contract (which I had not done in ages), and everything's hunky-dory now. The Acer laptop built-in wifi is quite sucky.
Would suggest avoiding the high gain antenna. There's enough cancer-causing radiation around already as it is.
Ola said:To use high gain antenna, you will also need a high gain card to get that extra range.
Wolfgang said:You mean using this product,

requires a high gain card? :dunno:
