Why people talk of treatment at private hospital?

Just because we are covered 100% by insurance, do we always go for the most expensive treatment?

Looking at the case of the car insurance, the premium keeps on increasing because car owners don't care if the workshop is jacking up the repair cost since the insurance company is paying everything. But eventually, it will come back to haunt the car owners. 羊毛长在羊身上...

that is a bad comparison. car are not human being. our body deserve prompt treatment/diagnosis or best treatment to recover asap.

car body can sell away but not your body..

polyclinic is a place that you can find ton of unmotivated workers - from registration to consultation to pharmacy, it will take you 6 hours if you go at 8am. Worst they might ask you to come back after lunch.

but if you go to register at 3.30pm you will have super fast services.

Long story short, if you can afford it, invest in term insurance and medical insurance. Key word here is "invest". Most people think of term and hospitalisation plans as a "cost" because if nothing happens you get back nothing.

I have medical insurance which cover me 100% but dam have to pay in advance.
I went for my day surgery @ GE and it cost me around 5K (hospital fee) although entire bill including doctor fee was about 8K+ and i paid everything in advance (Medisafe can only use 1k+).
It took me around 2 months + to get money back from Insurance, imagine my bill would be around 50k~100k how to fork out such money if have no substantial saving?

Time to change????

In general, private hospitals are better than government ones....but value for money? That's another story.... One thing I do know, rich ones seek their treatment in Sg lor.

While living in KL, I have encountered two guys having the same surgery: Appendectomy

The govt/semi govt one cost about $1.5K

The private cost more than $10K ...

Your insurer took a long time to pay you back.

My experience i had a day surgery and it took private hospital to generate the final bill in 15 days. I submit to Great Eastern and they processed within 1 week. Following week they pay up to Gleneagles and Gleneagles refunded my credit card payments.

When i emailed Gleneagles payment admin and they responded to me within 1-2 days. Promptly. GE processing was also fast and when i was admitted to hospital i ask them to do E Submit to GE.

I would advice having emergency credit cards to use for advance payment. Bank told me they can extend 50% more credit in event of medical emergency.

Told you already. Don't force yourself to stay in "classy" ward at hospital (lucky this one is not at expensive private hospital or else bill may be higher say, $1 Million) ; just for FACE value. Then later grumble cannot pay.

Worker served with $147,000 C-class bill

I HAD an accident at work last June. Initially, the interim hospital bill from the National University Hospital indicated a subsidy.

But when the final bill was given to me, I was shocked. The bill for my stay at a C-class ward amounted to an unsubsidised total of $147,000.

Patient turned down advice on subsidies

MR TAN Guan Seng spent most of his hospitalisation at the high-dependency and intensive-care units during his two-month stay at the National University Hospital.

His hospitalisation charges were originally pegged at the subsidised rate as our admission office staff had overlooked that it was a work-related injury. We apologised to him for this.

When Mr Tan's wife made a request to upgrade him to a private ward, the hospital's staff informed her that the estimated bill would exceed the quantum to be borne by Mr Tan's employer under the Work Injury Compensation Act.

Really, if you are in your 30s/40s, just buy the full works for hospitalisation + the rider. Few hundred bucks, next time raise at most 5-8% per annum.

That is nothing. Even if you add in $300k worth of Life Insurance its nothing. Go to youtube and search for china disposable chopsticks and how its made. Cannot siam such stuff.... they will continue to come in waves.

Teh Si @ Ya Kun is already $1.70! (WTF?) And some have 3 x tea sessions. And some smoke at least 1 pack a day. But seriously can't blame them, commercial rent....go check it out (their stocks don't run as much though, go figure what happened)

cqprime, stocks already 2009 ex-story liao played mainly US markets, now not vested. :)

This is an interesting case. I guess some people think by going to MP u can get away from a large hospital bill. Treating the MPs like waiver officers hahah;p:bsmilie:

I am with Incomeshield, the normal hosp one with rider. Doctor advised surgery and said "You got insurance, I take care". Went for day surgery, 1.8k....just handed insurance papers to the admin and they did the rest. I did not pay a single cent. Not sure what happened, perhaps they deducted from the medisave first or something and put it back.

Anyway I think I will buy another 200-300k worth of Life.

2100@ my friend whom trades from home does USA Stocks too and finds Spore stocks boring and slow moving.

Well cost of living is going up and what goes up the most is medical .

With the abnormal weather, anyone got treated in hosp recently for flu issues?

Diagnosis : Mentally unsound

If any bro or family members of yours ever go to a govt hosp for treatment of a medical complex issues. Due to what ever reasons the doctors in the hosp cant find the root cause.

Be careful if they diagnosis u or ur family member for : Mentally unsound > Lead to Pain

Please go and get a second opinion in a private doctor and not buy such an argument easily. Once a person is committed to IMH, there is no turning back for him or her or yourself.

you mean they will classify you as mentally ill n referred to IMH if they cant find the problem when u r in pain? could u elaborate on the last sentence?

Not sure how "fast" are they are diagnosing "unfound pain = mentally unsound/it's in your head".

But here's my experience (so far),

I went to the doctor because of a knee pain back in Jan 10. Referred to an ortho specialist. Did all the diagnostic tests (x-ray, MRI & even physio), knee sharp pain didn't go away. The only incident I could remember was bending one knee down on floor and carrying heavy stuffs up. Doctor then said the only sure way is to do a scope (cut 2 holes on knee) and go in to take a look. I said if that is what is needed to get things fixed, go ahead.

Surgery done in Apr 10, came out from it with a nerve issue, weak knee & pain still. My whole left/outer side of my L knee has lost it's sensory feelings and it's hyper sensitive to ANY kind of touch (pants included). Medication and more physio, doesn't help. Doctor said "it can't be from the knee surgery." Sent me for x-ray on my BACK. nothing. Got frustrated (hey! I'm the one living with the pain!).

Went to another hospital for a second opinion. Wah, best, sent to physio (AGAIN), just to satisfy them that their physio there is better. Nothing changed (ok, maybe my leg seems stronger now, but still wobbly/knee nerve-related pain (electric shocks kind, burning kind). Physio kept telling me, it's in my "head" and that the pain has goton stuck in the mind. They started asking "am I very stressed recently", maybe it's how I manage etc etc. (btw I'm in the psychology business).

So, cut short, complex/unfound pain for the doctors can be = in your head. I don't blame them TOTALLY. As there have been research found that stress and other psychological factor may cause pain (not fake but real to suffers). But probably if they to brush it all to that in the first instance, i would probably scream.

Ok, sorry, rant off. I'm still seeking treatment there.. long long road ahead (yah, now they MRI-ed my back and found some disc bulging pressing on some nerve which might be ONE of the cause of pain in the first place *smacks forehead*)

Without doubts, medical cost is going to go up........ and up, blaming on better accessible, on abuse, on anything one can thing off, but take care to look after yourself.

Extracted from Article:

"To keep health-care costs low, our policy is to prescribe standard drugs and cost-effective implants for our subsidised patients. However, where the patients have expressed a strong preference for such non-standard items despite knowing that they will have to pay for them, we will meet their requests."

It is the people request to have non standard items to be used for treatment thus pushing up their bill. When the bill blows up, these people will complained and abuse the hosp staff and throw it to the MPs to become waiver officer.

I feel we are responsible to our own expenses and should stop tai chi to other people to solve our over expenses. Irresponsible.

;(

Thanks for sharing, yours was done in government hospitals?

" (yah, now they MRI-ed my back and found some disc bulging pressing on some nerve which might be ONE of the cause of pain in the first place *smacks forehead*)"

So in the end they found the back bone disc slipped and i am glad you r getting the treatment u need.

I find because in government hospital u r referred to multiple doctors...it takes a very sharp doctor to assess and conclude your problem.

:cry::cry:
