Why Leica?

my two cents on this interesting thread.

Well I believe that the discussion should focus on camera/lenses because they carries a different purpose than cars/watches..
To me, and it's a highly personal choice, photography is a means to convey emotions through still images. Then I will try to obtain the devices will ease my way to reach this objective.
One part of me, is kind of saying in the process to create something which bring emotion do I need to be so attached to the brand name of the components I used, by doing so will I be not only reducing the image to the device I used? I mean for instance:
- Do I want to have a well thought picture?
- Or do I want to obtain a picture with the Leica look?
Another part of me, is thinking that the quality of the device will help me focusing of the subject of the photo and not on the means to reach that aim.

Still I am fairly new to photography, the pictures I took so far make me think I should first work to improve my composition skills.

This being said Leica is pretty good at marketing, I have read somewhere that some Leica owners read the manual as a Bible on a regular basis. When you reach that point I guess it fairly useless to try to argue ;).

Cheers,

Dont know about the digital M but the Leica m3-m7, no need read manual, all the same.

RF cameras are not like DSLR with loads of buttons & lots of settings.

I go for my kind of look, not the leica look, also not too sure what is the leica look la ;)

We well thought picture look is a millon times better than the leica look;)

the "leica look" is a construct that arises from human nature. If you blow $$$$$ on one lens, you will definitely say it got special "look" lah.

Why Leica? I wonder myself...until I saw the pictures when we went to East Europe...
1. Light and small...yet the picture quality was smooth as silk.
2. Picture sharpness...he cropped the picture, and blew it up...yet it was sharp:
3. Colour was superb...I like the color of my E5 pictures...yet there was something special about Leica images.
4. Pricey...look.
5. Not many can afford.
6. He downloaded pictures on iPad...and showed to fellow travellers...it made the quality of leica all the more memorable.
7. its because its leica.

Ahchoo...urg! I have been poisoned...h..e...l...p...matter of time.

Welcome to Hotel Leica @_@

I fully agree with what Nelson said " Its not the destination but the journey"

Well, I got poisoned when I was in Japan in Feb and got bitten by the Leica 'bug'.

I can guarantee you one thing, once you're bitten...you're hooked...will become a Leica addict! I am serious!

I can only say, if you dont try, you wont know.

So,my suggestion, go and beg, borrow or steal a Leica, shoot it for a week or too, and let us know your take on the camera.

I assure you, you wont be dissapointed. I wasn't!

Gear is always fun. It infatuates, it creates a "what-if" situation.
However, even more than the mystique of the brand Leica,
what is perhaps more important and often neglected,
in my opinion, is to shoot more and always
be learning.

leica pulls chicks......:bsmilie::bsmilie:

"why leica?"

My brain:" ya why leica?! "
My heart:" **** the brain, go leica!! "

a very subjective topic and open-ended one. speaking from a newbie M once you are in leica hard to get out :)

The rolleiflex is the biggest chick magnet in my arsenal.. ;);p:embrass:

they just can't take their hands off it..

Then they haven't saw my big, bad Hasselblad yet:P;)

really?? i got to bring my rolleiflex out more often liao....
hang it around my neck and walk along orchard road... kekekke
