Why is Canon so quiet?

What ever am sticking with my 5D3 per se.

Whatever it is, 5d3 is more than enough for me for the next 3 years.
Looking forward to M2, with 70D spec, to replace my s95.

What is wrong with the current Canon lineup? Anything crucial missing that will affect your photography shoot? :dunno:

All the leading manufacturers are not making money and are projecting bleak outlook (http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/), so, doing things right the first time in a timely fashion may be the only way to survive. Both Canon and Nikon have to defend their market shares in a smaller cake, and both need to come out with winners fast. Nikon's Df is a good measure to ascertain how desperate the big two can be. So, Canon can learn a good lesson but to wait can mean also disaster.

That is incorrect in many ways. Firstly, Canon is cutting their PROFIT outlook. They are still making money, just not as much as they had projected previously. In fact, they are expecting 11% increase in operating profit (see here) for 2013 as compared to 2012. In the imaging systems division, there is a 3.8% year-on-year increase in net sales. Secondly, Canon should NOT repeat Nikon's mistake of introducing a silly product like the Df (too expensive and poor in features). Making a product that the masses do not want to buy is to incur unnecessary operating costs.

I am still waiting for decent replacements to their aged 17-40 f/4L and 50 f/1.4 lenses.

There is definitely SOMETHING NEW coming soon.......
1) Most cost effective way will be FREE UPGRADE of current DSLR's firmware. Eg. 7D.
2) Radical design to overhaul all present DSLR body.
3) Replacement of accessories like 430EX II flash.

During this period while there is no "action" from Canon.
Go and sign up Photography or Video courses.
Cheers!

Do you know what products the Imaging Systems Division consists of?

Do you have the breakdown? Otherwise, it's all guesswork and hypotheses.

The fact is Canon is making money. Nikon... we should know today or tomorrow. Sony... losing money big time. These are facts.

Hi guys, based on Canon financial report, Imaging Systems Division consists of :

1) Interchangeable lens digital cameras
2) Interchangeable lenses
3) Digital compact cameras
4) Digital camcorders
5) Digital cinema cameras
6) Inkjet printers
7) Large-format inkjet printers
8) Commercial photo printers
9) Image scanners

Overall Canon as a group is still making money. However, the compact camera segment sales is shrinking while DSLRs are still growing. it is the compact series that are killing Canon sales.

From the latest CIPA numbers (till Sep 2013) and Nikon's Nov 2013 financial report, 7,481,644 DSLRs were shipped in the period Mar-Sep 2013, of which 2,980,000 (39.8%) came from Nikon. Most of the remaining 60.2% of shipped DSLRs probably came from Canon since we do not expect Pentax and Sony to sell many DSLRs. That gives us a hint of Canon's market shares in the DSLR arena for the period Mar-Sep 2013.

In the period of Jan-Sep 2013, for every MILC shipped worldwide, 4.66 DSLRs were shipped.

All these numbers should tell us how Canon has been doing in 2013 so far. Perhaps not as good as 2012, but certainly far better than the competition.

Oh, we'll have to add monitors and security cameras to Jedi's list soon. 4K video editing monitors from Canon... A pretty creative business decision, I must say.

Thom Hogan just posted his latest analysis/prediction of the market here based on Nikon's financial report. He translated Nikon's forecast of 6.2 mil interchangeable lens cameras into 33.1% market shares. Canon expects to sell 8 mil interchangeable lens cameras which is equivalent to 42.7% market shares based on Thom Hogan's analysis. Total Canikon market shares add up to 75.8%, consistent with 2010, 2011 and 2012 numbers.

Market shares for various parties appear to be stable in the midst of a shrinking market. It is therefore important that companies find creative ways to generate revenue by investing in new markets.

Why is this relevant to photography? It gives assurance to photographers who have significant investments in Canikon lenses; these major players are not going under anytime soon. Hard to say what fate has in store for Sony, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax and Fujifilm. Also, camera companies that remain profitable are more likely to invest in research and development for future products.

There is probably no need for anymore research and development since there is probably nothing crucial missing that will affect our photography shoot.

Yup, nothing major. This is why I intend to keep using my current DSLRs for the next 5 years at least. :bsmilie:

Having said that, I'll like to see the following improvements from Canon:
(a) improved on sensor PDAF... the current long blackout time and long shot-to-shot time on the 70D in single shot live-view mode is ridiculous
(b) lighter ILCs... but not ridiculously small like MILCs whose poor grips drive me nuts... size & weight of 100D is perfect
(c) improved sensors with much better low ISO dynamic range

In the meanwhile, I will invest in lenses... still waiting for better f/4 FF ultrawide lens from Canon...
