why blow so much money on simple things?

Tripod too expensive, and you don't shoot long night exposures or > 1000mm, use a monopod lar. Much cheaper and better in some instances. ;p

i have seen my friends camera fell to the ground becos of his $20 tripod....the wind was hugh that day and i see his tripod just dropped onto the floor with his camera...hmmm...heart pain man....and mine still standing strong in the winds..hahhahaha

Yeah, now I recall that a few times when using my flimsy tripod for self shots in a windy weather, I was wondering whether it will stay up or go down .

Gymrat76 - what about VR function on your lens? If the mirror slap is more than it can compensate for, then is it any good?

ST1100 - about getting used to the prices: but what about my significant other? :bsmilie: She can understand high prices for things that are obviously high tech, but 100+ for tripod would be absolutely nono.

Wai - 1K+ for a tripod/head????  :flush:

Try mounting a 10D body + 70-200 f/2.8 IS USM + 550EX flash on a $20 tripod. You'll find that the gears are TOO heavy for the tripod. The whole thing may topple with a slight push. Even strong wind may just blow it over.

It's getting the right tripod for the right camera gear. It depends what kind of camera you have.

Yeah, let's try a monopod at wildlife with a 500/4 or larger. :)

1k for a tripod is normal for hardcore equipments. Ballheads like the Markins are already $600-$700, AUB too! :)

This is what i call hardcore

The Arca Swiss Monoball B1 cost $800+ and the Gitzo G1325 is close to $1000 already

I too was like you before. Thinking that I shopuld not spend too much on a tripod. After all I already have a $75 aluminium tripod. But then I mount the tripod with my 10D and 28-138 and immediately I know that it would not be stable. So I bought a better tripod and it works fine until I mount my 10D with my Sigma 50-500 plus the battery grip. It just would not hold. So I sold that and now got me a Gitzo. It is sturdy but there is some flexing so I am now looking for a new ballhead that can hold the setup firmly.

What I am saying here is I do not spend unnecessarily. When you find that you need to upgrade for some reason or another then you have to. I would not want to spend any more on tripod but how knows. I may need a better one soon and I would not hesitate to spend on it if the need arises. I am not taking chances on my expensive equipment. BTW I also se my tripod for my Nikon SLT too. So if I get something it must be because I need it or because I have no choice but not because of my ego.

Hiee...

ROT....just get what you think you need and what your expected results are. Don't get it based on what others say.....
In anything you buy on this earth...there will always the items of same
function but of different class (i.e pricepoint).....BTW Pricepoint is not equivalent to Build or quality 100% of the time....nowadays.....

Actually, for focal length, i have tried 50-500 on a cheap $40 Sanfrotto monopod (rated 5kg) and 234RC head. It's ok for the 1.85kg glass and i can bring it down to 1/200s easily. Any lower will mean i need to shoot static subjects, any windage means a bit tricky already. There are monopods rated for > 10kg. Well anyway, i don't shoot nature often, so correct me if i am wrong. Tripods the last time i brought to Indonesia to shoot birds (or even Sungei Buloh), it was really tricky.

I have seen Sports Illustrated staff photogs using 600/4, 400mm/2.8...and they use monos. :) So shouldn't be a problem lar, unless you know something that i don't.

I turned the VR off, as stated in the manual when mounted on the tripod. Anyway, the VR takes time to work, as it calculates movement for a short time before the camera takes the picture, i.e. when you depress the shutter halfway. If there's blurring caused by mirror slap, even VR can't help, as when the mirror slap occurs, the picture is taken -the VR doesn't have time to work

OK, thanks for very informational post. I didn't know that. Does the stabilizer in Panasonic Lumix cameras work the same way?

Canon 2nd & 3rd generation IS can compensate for mirror slap and resultant vibration. Guess Nikon VR has to catch up.

But hmm, 2 seconds on a tripod without wind plus cable release and the image is blurred? D70 must really have an earth-shattering mirror slap then.

I learn something new in Clubsnap every day.

I guess 2 sec is too long for mirror vibration to have any impact. Mirror vibration is a concern in shorter duration. More likely the tripot cannot make it and is still vibrating during the imaging process.

It's dead simple with a monopod, as long as it's not birds in flight and works fine with lenses of up to 1200mm focal length (before TC's are added)

Interesting thread...

I have always wanted to say this but got no chance... but now the chance is here:

"Why buy a ferrari and scrimp on the wheels?" :D

By the same token, why buy a Corolla and put expensive spoiler on it ? :)

If you use your Ferrari just to go to the supermarket at 40km/h, then regular wheels are good enough. Not cool, but good enough. That is the exact point.

would u wanna put ur 600mm lens on a $20 tripod?
