Try mounting a 10D body + 70-200 f/2.8 IS USM + 550EX flash on a $20 tripod. You'll find that the gears are TOO heavy for the tripod. The whole thing may topple with a slight push. Even strong wind may just blow it over.

It's getting the right tripod for the right camera gear. It depends what kind of camera you have.

I too was like you before. Thinking that I shopuld not spend too much on a tripod. After all I already have a $75 aluminium tripod. But then I mount the tripod with my 10D and 28-138 and immediately I know that it would not be stable. So I bought a better tripod and it works fine until I mount my 10D with my Sigma 50-500 plus the battery grip. It just would not hold. So I sold that and now got me a Gitzo. It is sturdy but there is some flexing so I am now looking for a new ballhead that can hold the setup firmly.

What I am saying here is I do not spend unnecessarily. When you find that you need to upgrade for some reason or another then you have to. I would not want to spend any more on tripod but how knows. I may need a better one soon and I would not hesitate to spend on it if the need arises. I am not taking chances on my expensive equipment. BTW I also se my tripod for my Nikon SLT too. So if I get something it must be because I need it or because I have no choice but not because of my ego.

In anything you buy on this earth...there will always the items of same
function but of different class (i.e pricepoint).....BTW Pricepoint is not equivalent to Build or quality 100% of the time....nowadays.....

Actually, for focal length, i have tried 50-500 on a cheap $40 Sanfrotto monopod (rated 5kg) and 234RC head. It's ok for the 1.85kg glass and i can bring it down to 1/200s easily. Any lower will mean i need to shoot static subjects, any windage means a bit tricky already. There are monopods rated for > 10kg. Well anyway, i don't shoot nature often, so correct me if i am wrong. Tripods the last time i brought to Indonesia to shoot birds (or even Sungei Buloh), it was really tricky.

I have seen Sports Illustrated staff photogs using 600/4, 400mm/2.8...and they use monos. So shouldn't be a problem lar, unless you know something that i don't.

If there's blurring caused by mirror slap, even VR can't help, as when the mirror slap occurs, the picture is taken -the VR doesn't have time to work

I guess 2 sec is too long for mirror vibration to have any impact. Mirror vibration is a concern in shorter duration. More likely the tripot cannot make it and is still vibrating during the imaging process.

It's dead simple with a monopod, as long as it's not birds in flight and works fine with lenses of up to 1200mm focal length (before TC's are added) :devil:
