While garment keep talking about plenty of jobs, not enuf workforce and have to hire foreign workers. This is not the area of problems. We are not completing with this workers. We are never lack of jobs in that areas, we have plenty of jobs for factory workers, cleaners etc. Our problem is middle income class and older age people. Most of us are over educated and for this new generation, 7 out of 10 are degree holder. It is not possible for these people to fill the lower income space which never a problem for job vacancies. If these highly educated group started to accept jobs like taxi drivers, factory labours does the problem solved?

No, these people who are in the lower income group will become jobless. If you can hire a high education people to do the same job why not? Then the education system here will degrade too. Why? If study so much and work the same as a lower educated group then does it make that much sense to study so much? That is why places like Philipines, Myammar, India who has not enuf jobs for middle income and too many graduate and soon the qualification look irrelevent and soon the education system weaken. I know some maids/labourers are degree holder for example.

If more graduates starting to drive taxi, sell hawker does that make us entreprenear? No, while highly skilled, we can contribute more to the economy. By driving taxi or hawker for long time, we are taking away jobs from the elderly groups and the skill are lost. While temporary solving some problems, we put these problems to another group (elderly).

Entreprenuership is using management skills to manage a corporation. That to me is plain hawker. Entreprenuer?

For those who are jobless, which industry were you in previously ?

18%? The govt stated only 4.3%. Who's telling the truth? :bsmilie:

You guys need to understand the term "unemployment Rate". According to the Labour books of Singapore - "Defined by you know who", Unemployment refers to people whom are not working and not looking for jobs..So if you are not working and looking for a job, you will not be included in this index....

Do not believe what the "people or the press" tells you. Take them with a pinch of salt.......They normally blow up the small success and under report
on the failures..... ;(

O, yes....I am a HR person

tbteng,
:-0 You have ASS? Anti-Shake-System? :-0

:bsmilie: unemployment rate is defined like this in many places.. not by you-know-who .. the reason is that housewives have no "jobs" but are not jobless... and if you are jobless, you should be looking for a job.. unless you give up, then that percentage of people are not reflected.

Of course its 4.3% lah and as stated, it will be 4% by year end!

:nono: :nono: They CAN'T be wrong! WHY?

Remember the policy "STOP AT TWO"? It was very effective at that time, so now need to welcome more foreign talents to fill in the gap.

They are also being paid $millions$ to create jobs by cutting your CPF, your salary and your Bonus at the same time increasing your goods n service tax, Isn't that attractive enough for foreign investments?

Singapore have so many things that are NO. 1 in the world.
Don't you know the salary of the world largest economy's President cannot fight that of our leaders.

Although he has Airforce 1, ours got a whole airline. :blah: :blah: :bsmilie:

Erhem! ok, jokes aside, I'm considered self-employed but biz not good, already spent 3 months looking for new job.
4% may be low, but if we estimate the workforce to be 1/2 of the 4 million population. Then 4% of 2 million still comes up to 80,000!

but the only consolation is I like what i am studying now and thro knowledge gain, is able to generate some passive income to cover my course fee ;)

think we are in this age where we have to constantly upgrade ourselve and keep abreast with the lastest happening and technology etc, otherwise, the prospect of being jobless will be very real esp when we hit 40s onwards.....

just my humble opinion
