Thanks kthan! The individual dives sound expensive! Do you have any previous package deals that you can post here to give us an idea of the price for, say, 3D2N at lembeh? Combining that with another 3D2N at bunaken wld be ideal! ;p Waisj, keep us posted too of the package deal you can get from tasik ria.

Backside itchy the other day so I decided to write CEO NTUC an email on flood insurance.

Mr. Tan replied ...........now having a flurry of emails with him. Just wonder if you fellas will be interested in insuring your equipment , a la DEPP. For me, I have to becos of the amount of $$ invested.

Dear Eric Han,

My colleague Ronald Low has made a summary below. It is close to your summary.

If we offer this special insurance, can you estimate the likely market of swimmers who are likely to buy this insurance from us?

If we charge the same premium rate as the current insurer, ie about 1.5% on the insured sum, will it be of interest to you and the
other owners? Do you prefer to buy from a specialist insurer, or from NTUC Income, as we are a local organisation and is able to
process the claim more easily?

Are you looking for a lower premium, or for more convenient way to make a claim?

Dear Mr Tan,

Summary of the insurance. Plan specially designed for diving equipment :
Divers Equipment Protection Program (offered by Innovative Programs Group Inc)

1) Main Cover
Worldwide coverage against theft (incl airline loss) and accidental damage to diving equipment + underwater photographic equipment.
By default, it is a non-flood coverage. The flood cover is an extension.

2) Rating (3 tiers) :
a) Standard Coverage (non-flood)
Rate(s) 1.35% to 1.9% on sum insured (lower rate on higher sum insureds)
b) Flood extension - add 4% loading on total premium above.
c) Any item above $5000/-, additional 4% loading.

3) Deductibles
a) $25/- each & every claim (for non flood perils)
b) 10% of claim, min $25/- each & every claim (for flood/water damage claims)

4) Admin
a) Insured equipment with the serial numbers to be registered with insurer.
b) Theft losses must be reported to police
c) In the event of loss (flooding), insured need to provide a report/verification from
manufacturers that equipment is damaged.
d) Equipment is replaced or repaired. No cash settlements.
e) Website is silent about loss by misplacement (do not think this is covered).

My best regards,
Ronald

Subject: Underwater Camera Flood Insurance

Dear Mr Tan

I am an avid amateur underwater photographer and the fear of potential
flooding on my investment is depriving me from totally enjoying my hobby.
While flood insurance is available in the USA, I cannot find any that is
remotely similar in Singapore.

With the proliferation of affordable underwater casing for digital cameras,
I see more and more divers taking up underwater photography. Flood insurance
is a niche which I hope NTUC Income would look into. A most basic
underwater camera setup costs SGD 1000 upwards. From my many online chats
with fellow divers, many bemoan the lack of such an insurance in Singapore
despite their desires to insure their equipment.

I sincerely hope NTUC would look into this and I would be most glad to offer
any help in making the offering of flood insurance a reality to Singaporean
divers. Currently, the most popular insurance in USA is Dievrs Equipment
Protection Program. I hereby provide you the url for your perusal.

wow! thats a lot of more work done than i did! i only checked with DEPP .... sure we will be interested! esp if the insurance can come without a must for BCD and reg ... for people like me la.

Wow .... in that case, are we supposed to do Survey for them? Chances are we will have to check how many divers in Singapore and take a sample for example 10% of the divers and see how many will actually be interested in the Policy.

For a yearly premium of 1.5% (and we could safely assumed they will want the 4% flood extension, meaning 4% for "floodable" equipment, higher risk).... based on an average of BCD / Regulator / Camera / Video / Mask (wear and tear not counted) / Dive Computer. We are looking at an average of Non Flood - BCD + Regulators + First Stage about $1.5k, thus will be about $22.50 per year.

Flood possible objects ranging from $1.5K - $6k (High end Camera + Housing) at 4% = $60 - $240 per year.

I guess each Underwater Photographer and/or Underwater Videographer will be looking at about between $82.50 - $260 per year for premium .......

For that amount, I got a feeling they will not be interested unless they can get about at least 5000 insurers.

hmmm. in my opinion, they'd definitely get to profit from it. i wouldnt do a survey for them. rather, they can do a simple market survey to know that diving is popular and getting even more so in singapore, and digital underwater photography's advancement should be quite easy to detect .. probably we can gather the few of us to express our interest in getting the policy. we only represent an insignificant portion of the diving population, and if yet the majority of us are keen on this, this should make them more positive on the marketability... but of course, you guys may wanna do it otherwise.

Well, physicologically wise, women are naturally more buoyant then guys, they tend to be able to retain fats, so it's quite natural. If you are more buoyant then her .... hmmmm .... I wondered ...... did you ..... or ..... well.... nah ... nevermind ;P.

I think his name is mentioned in the mail as "Eric Han, CFA" ;) ...... people Chartered Finance Analyst leh ...... LOL.......

Larry Smith? Well, he is supposed to be a world renowed skillful diver who had made Marco diving in indonesia famous by making alot of discovery there....... not that I care ;). LOL.....

BTW who is laixi?

Hehehe.... he already ask you for an estimate already :)..... pluck out a figure from the air? Well, I guess the thing here is we need to know how many divers are there in Singapore. ;) then do a estimation, for example, only 10% will buy insurance ;).... hehehehe......

Well, my answer goes something like " it's a niche which NTUC can definitely explore and develop. The growth rate would be phenomenal .With the base at zero, I'm sure you can do the maths....." There is a lot of other stuff in between, but no figures committed.

All I want is to get my camera and strobes insured. He asked if it was possible to collect a premium of $50,000 annually. think that is the fig they are looking at, which is possible definitely.

anyway, let's see how this develops.

Eric

i agree with kthan that we do not have to do anything like a survey for them. in the end they get to profit. we just want our stuff insured. not logical that they should lie back and wait for information. kthan has already presented to them an opportunity. surely we are not begging to get a local insurer, though it does help if there is one.

i dont even think we need to find out the size of diver population for them. it will be so much easier for them to do it than for us. really. one thing that we can do is to assure them if they do have the policy similar to DEPP, they can close about 20 policies immediately without even advertising yet. but i still hope it is not a must to include bcd and reg ...

i noticed the CFA thingie, just kept quiet ^_^

laixi is another diving friend of mine and kthan's, and she is on CS as well. but mostly she just reads what we are discussing, if you check back like ten pages ago, maybe you can see a few of her posts, hehee.

sehsuan is as gossipy as a woman!~ thats a very ;) tell tale sign liao le ...

oh ya ha, i am so engrossed in this topic that i almost forgot ...

chairman lanxx asks when is third SEED. he intends to make it late nov ... say ... just before hari raya. any takers?

ya... but i'm still less buoyant... :bheart: :bsmilie:

actually having a CFA who's into diving asking the folks who are playing with numbers daily can shake them up a little to wake up their ideas ;)

wait, if lanxx is the Chair Meh, beivied is the TKS, then who am i? :dunno:
