Frank - I went into several places last weekend to see if they had the DA50-200 and they looked at me as if I was deranged (particulary at Alan Photo in Funan).

So I phoned Shriro the new distributor, and they said they were not importing it. This is NOT encouraging for the future availability of Pentax stuff in Singapore, since it is a pretty mainstream lens.

Any idea of any shops where it is in stock? (My bargaining talents on the secondhand market are not as good as yours.)

Tim

timo,

check with mscolor and cathay.

I got mine from cathay and mscolor called me a month later to tell me they had stock and cheaper than cathay.

cathay should have stock for that lens. I don't know, but so far they are the only shop I see here with more pentax lens displayed.

Hi Tim, I saw the lens at Cathay Photo. Didn't ask the price, 'cause I was interested in the other lenses: 12-24 and 14mm, but the prices are way over my budget :( If only I could win a ToTo ...

BTW, saw some other lenses at some secondhand shops, including FA50/2.8 macro, Tokina 80-400mm, even an A*85mm/1.4! Again, I wish I could win a ToTo or at least a 4D ;p

Good luck and happy hunting ...

Hi Frank - actually in the end I found one at MSColor.

Hi Frank - in the end I found one at MSColor. I think the guy at Alan Photo in Funan was bullshitting me. And the idiot woman at Shriro did say that the lens was not available in Singapore - although perhaps this was stock brought in under the J&J regime ... who knows? Anyway I have it and I must say I am very impressed, although it's not particularly fast ... I don't use tele all that often and it will serve my purposes particularly if I give into the temptation of an image-stabilised body later in the year or next year. I know you like light lenses - boy this is light - looks and feels like a twin of the 18-55 more or less. And the zoom action is nicer than my cheap Sigma 55-200 - which rolled off a chair onto the floor and smashed its front element about three months ago :(. Aaarrgh ...

(Don't you find the prices in those 2nd hand shops in Peninsula P and SC a bit high?)

Congrats again Tim. I'm sure you'd love this little lens. I saw that lens at Cathay Photo too, so I guess it's still instock here in SG. Sorry about the accident of your Sigma 55-200 lens, which is also a nice one AFAIK.

The prices at those second hand shops are indeed quite high, especially compare with the deals we can get from eBay or ClubSnap B&S forum. I never bought any lens from them yet, but I guess the price for the Tokina 80-400 is quite good ;p Well, I don't need it, otherwise it might've been in my collection already ;)

Cheers and happy hunting.

trying to reactivate this discussion :)

I was at the NDP rehearsal and found myself kept on alternating between my kit 18-55mm for the wide view at 18mm and my Sigma 70-300mm APO zoom lens for zooming in. This was irritating and I thought the more times I change, the more likely dust will go in.

I was thinking to myself why so troublesome if I can get an 18-200mm instead. (they don't have a 18-300mm, otherwise I would be thinking of that too!)

Any thoughts if this is a good compromise for zoom range in an all-in-one package? That way I only need to bring one lens instead of 2.

I was John 3:16's new shop in Funan and they quoted me like $499 for the Sigma 18-200mm and $599 for the Tamron. I was told that the improvements are marginal and it would be better to get the Sigma and save the $100.

Any take on this?

Thanks and Cheers

Base on the reviews I read, the Sigma version is better optically, but the Tamron one is built better. I'd go with the cheaper Sigma if I were buying a one lens solution.

BTW, if do change, pls let me know. My friend is looking for a kit lens;p

Good luck,

i just come back from cathay and bought a strap there, they are selling $420 for the pentax 50-200mm lens. It is available at marina sq branch.

thanks fengwei,
that's what I heard also. I would most certaibly be keeping my kit lens. If the 18-200 prove to be pretty decent, I may consider letting the 70-300mm go...heh heh
looks like your friend has bought one of the 2 DS that was being offered here recently without kit lens! ;p

the 50-200 would not have been ide enough for my needs. in anycase, I already have the 70-300mm which is optically not as good but decent enough for my needs.

btw, anyone here selling a Pentax k-mount 18-200mm? I don't mind getting it second hand if its reasonably cheaper than brand new.:)

wow...just scoured the entire funan and peninsula and only 1 shop sells the Sigma 18-200mm lens for the Pentax. Unfortunately, the only shop selling it is charging $$$...sigh...

can't remember the name but its one of those in the centre with no shop depth, i.e. the shop is very shallow and small.
