Which tripod?

I have tried a few tripods in my life....first the "free" canon tripod....totally cannot make it...for PnS may be can. then the Manfrotto 190 also cannot make it, then the benro with their ballhead (KB1) I think....still terrible.....until now when I finally changed to the gitzo GT3541L and the kangrinpoche ball head then I am satisfied. Tripod is part 1 of the story....ball head is the part 2 of the story!

Sounds like:
First: "$free"
then: $$
then: $$$
then: $$$$ + $$$$$ = :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Moral of the story= No $, No Honey$ ...

Hi Stan, U got the same website in English??

Oops! Scotoma... the eyes see what it chooses to see.. and in my case.. what I didn't see.. :sweatsm:

Sorry about that. :embrass:

If you divide it by 20 years....it is a small sum to pay. 20 years of satisfaction compared to 20 years of frustration of creeping and unstableness!:sweatsm:

Considering whether to get the Benro M-257 (less than 400) or Manfrotto 055CX3 (about 500+).

Would Benro have advantage over Manfrotto for its screw tightening legs than clip locking? Find clip locking easier to break.

Like not many mention carbon serier for Benro or Manfrotto, is carbon fibre better beside weight?

Please help me to choose.
Million Thanks!

Is Tripod A300EX + ballhead BH-0 good enough for me? I am a guy, 1.63m tall and I have D300 + Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 + SB600.

If you buy a cheap and crappy tripod which can barely hold your camera and kit lens, then if you buy heavier/longer/better lenses, you may need to upgrade tripod too.
General guideline for stablity, tripod max holding weight must be at least 3times greater than the weight of the equipments (DSLR, lens, flash, etc) used.
If you follow Gitzo's rule:
Series1: up to 135mm lens
Series2: up to 200mm lens
Series3: up to 300mm lens; occ use may be up to 500mm for systematic
Series5: >500mm lens

Gitzo tripod is really good...Carbon 6x, G-lock, ALR system...Newer model only...
#Carbon 6x
#New G lock can absorb shock and handle vibrations very well....
#Anti Leg Rotation System
This is a good invest in a good stable tripod... Gitzo...

give it a try at the shop....a lot of shops allow try before buy.

This is what i am using. http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=450021
Very stable yet cheap Made In Japan legs. Those who went NS and carry GPMG tripod will find the weight quite similar. (:

Hello Zeropoint,

I am considering to get a Gitzo tripod and the sales person is pushing me 1541/1541T and Markins Q3T. (I quite like the Markins head as it is small and compact)

My current setup is Canon 7D and if I intend to use 70-200 f2.8 lens, which tripod should I go for?

I would prefer the tripod to be as mobile as possible.

Many thanks for any kind advise.

Regards,

You mention your setup is Canon 7D and if intend to use 70-200 f2.8 lens:

Yes, for GT1541 : DSLRs with 135mm lenses, up to a maximum of 200mm.
Yes, for GT1541T: Traveler is ideal for 135mm lens, & can be used with lenses up to 200mm.

GT1541 :159cm 1.1 kg 17cm 54cm 138cm 8kg
GT1541T :134cm 0.97kg 17.5cm 41cm 113cm 8kg

Since you prefer“mobile”, so how heavy the tripod (weight) you can accept and also the folded length of tripod [Which ones (GT1541 or GT1541T)? ; for travel or local use?].
Next, you also has to consider height of user vs max. height of tripod w/o extension of centre column which is more stable (I prefer at least eye level).

Find that the pano base is a bit small for Markins Q3T as compare to Q3 which I prefer.
Both ball heads are excellent & consider very compact. <FYI:I using the Q3>

Hi Bro,

How about Gitzo 0541? Based on weight wise, it can be used to hold a 70-200 plus body + grip but is it recommended? Mine is a Nikon D300....

I like 1541T but I already have the Q3 ballhead so not sure whether I can use it in 1541T. Thanks.

The salesperson did shown me the GT1541T with the Q3T. It is very nice for travelling as it can be folded backwards and very handy indeed. However, the only issue is that when fully extended, I have to windup the centre column to reach my height, which I thought would compromise the stability.

Seems like GT1541 is still a better choice.

Regards,

To askquek :

Get the GT2531EX.. Lightweight and ideal for marco/landscape and travelling.

i am usin it with Markins Q3T

I am using it for my set up below, heaviest being body + grip + sb-900 + 70-200 while shooting taka fashion show.

Rock Solid and steady!

Love it to death!

Thanks Numnumball for the recommendation.

Just went over to TK to check out 1541 but did not get a chance to see 2531. Will check it out this week.

Philip of TK quoted me GT1541 (SGD770) + Q3 (SGD430) + Plate (SGD80) = SGD1280.00 excluding bag.

Wonder how much will 2531 cost for the whole setup.

Regards,

why manfrotto 055 Xpro for me?

first, aluminium construction.

heavier = more stable.

second, i am not shooting on mobile outdoors, if i am, i don't use tripods... why use tripods when u need to be mobile... paradox...

lastly,

aluminium is not brittle...

sorry, but being mechanical engineering trained, one of the things they don't tell u is that upon impact, carbon fibre... cracks... while aluminium deforms elastically / plastically. so i rather have a deformed one than a cracked one.

but, really, tripod is meant to indoor or low mobility use for me...

why bring a tripod if u need to run around?

bring less, see more. no?

err, correction,

heard that the carbon one is more stable than aluminium

but i just got a problem with the brittle quality of carbon when stressed.

thus, aluminium for me

Where can I get the cheapest manfrotto 190pro ? What's the price right now? Tia

the market price for 055 is $220, so don't pay $220 for the 190

call a few shops or wait for another mass order for a good price for your 190

or get it used from here, but the clowns here want to let go at $150 used...

not going to happen for me, if i were u.

$100< would be a good buy. don't pay >50% for used items' new price
