Which one is recommended, Sony P10 or Canon IXUS 500

This two camera is so cool. How :( take Canon or Sony :(

If size is not an issue. I'll choose the P10. The IXUS 500 AF is slow, the LCD is terrible, shutterlag can be felt and the menu system will make one go nuts. The size of the IXUS is a pro but weight difference might be marginal. The P10 has got some manual controls which the IXUS does not have. I used to own the P9 as well. (Those days, I choose the P9 over the IXUS while comparing at the shop. The IXUS those days just didn't cut it.) I have not had to chace to compare pics of the IXUS 500 vs P10. But being a previous owner of the P series, frankly it won't lose out to the IXUS.

I wanted to buy an IXUS 500 because of underwater use. But after testing the camera in the shops twice. I still can't bring myself to buy it. After being so used to the clear menu system, great screen and fast response of Sony cameras. The IXUS feels like a torture to use. Of course this is my opinion, the things that bug me might not be a problem for you. Best to test it out then decide.

BTW. Does the IXUS 500 have a histrogram? I was just playing with my friend's IXUS 400 the other day. This feature does not exist? Either that, or it's hidden in the impossible to navigate and understand menu system.

i agree with bernards, the autofocus for ixus is pretty slow. i had a ixus 400 b4. but have upgrade to a V1. Why not consider a V1? Think its pretty much better than the P10 and Ixus 500. Ixus 500, bought at 790, but its still very much a auto-camera.

The V1, full manual control is only 890 with a 128x2 MS bundle. Effectively, I bought my V1 for only 765, which I think its super worth it. since SOny has drop their price from 1210 to 999 RRP now. :)

As far as I know, the IXUS 400 does not have the histogram function, i dont think Ixus 500 has it too.

Hi Bernards,

Lucky you mentioned those points to me. I better try the camera and see how. Actually, my P9 so far so good :).. i really love it. Just that, most of the ppl is using 5mega pixel nowaday hehe so i also thought of upgrading it :P..
Since the AF is slow, i think i might not like Ixus 500..

Hi dropzone,

I likes V1 too, but it's not a built in flash. I worries there is one day the flash will Matti.. because very time up down up down.. it might gone case one of these days :p

hehe. i dont think it will be so cham. hehe. but its kinda irritating when the thing needs to be popped up and the fingers are blocking it. hehe

Karyinn, no problem. I just happen to be shopping for the same item. After being so used to the quality of Sony cameras. I find it so difficult to buy a Canon. To be fair, if you want a small camera with good pictures, it's the camera to own at this point in time. But with the prices of Sony cams dropping. Canon cameras are starting to look really unattractive.

My old P9 was still is mint condition after two years. I guess yours can't be that far off. Do wait for a little while before deciding. Sony is about to release a whole bunch of cameras real soon. If you get something like the W1, I won't be surprise if it beats the IXUS 500 to pulp. Since it's probably coming sometime in May/June. Now is not a good time to jump.

Hi dropzone,

Oh ya, that's what i am trying to say. I am sure my finger will spoilt the flash one day if i get V1 :sweatsm:

Hi Bernards,

True true i better be patient and wait for the new bunch come out. I am always so eager and impatient when i decide on something :P..
By the way, my Sony P9 is my one and only MOST EXPENSIVE TOY.. so it is very very well taken care of  . No scratches at all and the condition is 100% well :bsmilie: ..

You are suppose to get the F32X and turn your little V1 into a monster lah.

Hi giraffed,

I heard that there will be promotion for Canon IXUS500 during May and there will be freebies.. i will wait for one more week then buy ^^..

hi! any idea what kind of promotion it's gonna be? where can we get more details? :dunno:

Hi giraffed,
Not sure leh.. it's florence from MS Color told me. She really very nice ... ^^ and i call Alan Photo and Cathay Photo, her price is the best ^^..

Hi Bernards,

FX32?.. is it Sony brand?

Hi Dropzone,

Yesterday, i went to Cathay Photo, they told me Sony P100 will be out at May ^^..
And i saw the Sony P93... god.. is so ugly and big -.-.. i wonder who will want to buy that... :p

Hehe Karyinn, the Fx32 is a sony external flash for the prosumer V1, F828, F717 etc.

Reason for the size of the P93 is the use of AA batteries. Some consumers find AA batteries an advantage as they are easily available, so should the camera run out of juice while on tour, batteries can be purchased with ease.

Hehehe, seems the P100 is the way to go eh? BTW i've read some comments on DPreview STF that the image quality of the P100 (surprisingly) outshines that of the W1.

Hi ricleo,

Wow.. i never know that V1 can attach a External Flash.
My friend bought a canon Digital Camera during her trip to Taiwan this January. She said the camera is good but hor.. all the time is driving her crazy because it always keep running out of battery and she have to buy many many batteries to stay by. I think is because of the cold weather which make the batteries run out much much faster.

Can you tell me where u see the review of the P100. I try to search around Dpreview.. search here search there not much things leh..

I can't wait the P100 to come out.. But then i cannot buy immediately because i believe the initial price will be very expensive.. If it come out on May i think i will buy on July ^^.. do you think this is better :p

Oh ya.. the information really quite little ... will have to wait patiently

Yeah, read that too but weird cause they had same lens, CCD all that... somemore W1 newer but it's cheaper...

hmmmm sure anot? give FOC oso dun want? ahahhaha....

Anyway for starters, "steve" takes terrible review pics... true he takes pics at similar locations to enabe us to compare pics... however the pics of the differing cameras were clearly taken at completely different timings. From the light intensity and shadow drop, the P10 pics were clearly taken in the hot afternoon sun, while that of the Canon seems to be from later afternoon or evening...

All things being constant, of course the subject will look nicer with better colour in the evening sun compared to being washed out under the noon sun.

2nd thing... the canon may win in colour saturation, but the P10 definitely wins interms of image detail and sharpness.

In any case, these are poor comparisions, and anyone intersted in a purchase should be looking at user galleries instead of this review gallery.

steve's site is just a guide.. of cos u have to do some personnel homework.. color wise the sony just can't produce the actual color/ lightings accurately... too much noise in low iso tooo.. Anyway i nv ask u to compare when both pics are taken.. but the details and coloring of the photos... load them full size and compare the details see the color of the leafs......and u will get what i mean... :D

looks like u weren't reading what i wrote.

1) Differing conditions *will* affect colour reproduction. BTW, i'm not denying that canon has better colour saturation, but seriously, if u are talking abt reproduction, i can tell u that canon only saturates more, it does not reproduce the colours more "accurately" I own a P10, and a good friend of mine uses the Ixus400. we go out together alot, and compating pics of same occasions we took of, my old P10 produced the colours closer to the original setting where the pic was taken.

Noise in low iso, i agree that canon has less noise den sony, but this is because of the more aggressive noise reduction. You were asking me about detail level in the leafs? From the images, the P10 definitely has much more details in the leafs compared to the canon.
