I was going to plan for 17-55mm and decided to rent one out to try but no lens on hand so the next best thing is the 24-105. I was blown by the the range and the versatility of it. Now I am leaning toward the 24-105 now. Still considering the pro and con on both the lens.

24mm on a 1.6 FOVC body is not wide enough. Sooner or later you will want to get the 10-22. Why don't you have the 17-40, 50, 70-200 combination?? price is around 2600 brand new, or around 2200 2nd hand (same as the price of 10-22 + 24-205)

just to add more things in the mix.
I would say that all three lenses are super great lenses, you won't go wrong choosing any of those three.
It mostly depends on your "style of shooting"....
for example, for me I prefer the 24-105 because it has longer reach which suits me because I tend to crop my photos tight (meaning the longer zoom is more useful than the wide angle)

just my 2 cents, hopefully it doesn't confuse you more :bsmilie:

You've nailed it. Shooting style will determine which lens is for you. Available light photography? Street walkabout? Do you want wide angle and a bit of reach in the same lens, or can you afford to give up the wide end for one of the Ls?

There is really no wrong generic answer, just a wrong answer if the lens does not match your style.

Because, like cg171s said, it depends on personal style. Some people don't mind losing the wide end for more reach.

Finally, I landed myself a 24-105 after a long scrimping on other ppl's lens

congrats bro!!! Excellent choice, you won't regret it
Welcome to the L family :bsmilie:

Agree. my bank account took a big hit after i got my first L.

because many other Ls followed.

OT: I went to Harvey Norman and asked about the 17-55 price... I saw the price tag at $2200++ and the salesman says thats the price... I said it must be the price 2 years ago that they need to call Canon to update their prices :bsmilie: I think a manager came by and confirmed that they can go as low as 1390... not low enough for me

i changed from 24-105 to 17-55...

i feel that the wide is more important than the focal length... plus f2.8 can produce some bokeh when u need it...

for long focal length, i usually change to my 70-200... at 24-105mm... is like not wide enough and not long enough... but it suits flash user

hhhmmm....since i have the 10-22...i guess it's between 24-70 and 24-105...more inclined to 105 cos i shoot events...getting rid of my 70-200 2.8 IS tonite to fund 24-105 and a 580ex II...hee hee..

from u bros advice...i guess 24-105 is a better idea for event shooting?

just curious...with the IS on the 105...i can afford slower shutter speeds to compensate for the 1 stop diff in aperture right?

Yes the range is great for event. The IS allows me to go as low to 1/6 but if there is a lot of movement blur if the subject is moving around. You wont go wrong with this setup for event.

ur setup so similar to mine!

but from the-digital-picture.com the author suggest 24-70 for event actually...24-105 for outdoor stuff...still thinking...but i would prefer the range of 105...

24-70 would be great for non-flash photography and heavy and big.. But since you already have the flash, the f4 wouldn't be any issue for the 24-105mm. Check out my flick, all on the the recent one are on the 24-105mm.

If you happen to get the 24-105mm Get a 3rd party 83J lens hood. More protection against flare and knock. http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=402626
