if only one, it has to be 18-55.

Solutions to make it up:
use ur leg to zoom further.
shoot at high resolution and quality and crop later (digital zoom).

for travelling, try not to bring so many things. one lens one body is the best. ;)

This was my plan! Thanks!

IMHO...a good PnS will solve your dilemma over which lens to bring. Extremely light weight and no extra baggage to pack along.

But that would not be me.

I packed 6 lenses + 2 TC, 2 bodies, 2 flash units, 2 series 3 Gitzo plus chargers during my trip to Central Java.

Bring both, if not you will regret it!!! As I been through it, for either bringing the wrong lens or didn't bring the appropriate lens due to convenience sake.... Till date, I still regretted it...

Hii, newbie here...
My question is which len to bring, 18-55mm OR 55-200mm? for general shooting. Mostly shooting my family pictures and some landscape or scenary

Thanks!

Hi Bro,

Congrats on your 1st DSLR  I hope you enjoy shooting with it... Both lens are great for travel, but as others say 18-55 is a better choice as you may need to shoot landscapes and group photos.

Please note that there is no such word as "Len"! This has been pointed here a million times and I am the million and one :bsmilie:

Cheers and have a great trip! Will look forward to seeing your photos from the trip

Still a newbie.....lots to learn...now I know there is no such word as "LEN" ......
I am still in testing mode of my new toys...BTW....how to post pic here?

Between the 2, if you really cannot bring both, then the 18-55 would definitely be more useful. I think you will be more likely to want to take in big scenery, structures and landscapes rather than wanting to zoom in on some small detail (unless you are at Bondi beach :-) ).

Also, you can always crop to effectively "zoom in" but you can never "zoom out"! For a 6X4 photo, all you need is 1800X1200 pixels so you have lots of scope to crop unless you want to print larger.

Another solution: Sell off both and get the 18-200mm.

Aha.... I second tat. Japan supposedly has some really cheap places to get Nikon lenses. I read it in some other threads here on CS....

Perhaps that would be a good idea ? Bring a large bag with one lens and one body and come back with the bag full.... Take some orders from frens around u ? ha....

On a serious note, I'd get a good bag and bring both. Put the 18-55mm on and then if really really needed, change over to the 55-200mm. That way u wont regret..... Always felt that a good bag can help in this kind of situation. Pls dont tell me u wearing the camera + 1 lens around ur neck all the time..... lol ! :embrass:

Thanks! ya agreed.....maybe can get Lens from Japan cheaper.... but I may not have time to go shopping for lens..... :-(
I do have good bag that can take 1 body + 1 lens or 1 body + 2 lens .......my only problem is having to change lens to often during the trip..... :-(
Somemore I am a newbie in this.... changing lens still need a lot of pratise.

You only have 2 lenses.Changing of lenses should not be a problem.Just buy or DIY a small bag.

bring both lens . and rent a wide lens just to make sure u dun miss anything. or yeah. a tripod will be useful.

If need to choose ONLY one then it is 18-55mm loh.
You will probably take foto in a restaurant, cafe, shopping centre, museum, temple, street, scenery (with or without you). Less frequent need of longer focal length.

If you're not yet comfortable and ready to change lens, I would suggest getting the pow ka leow 18-105mm or 18-200mm lens.

I also know the pow ka leow lens can solve my problem.....but I don't have one leh.,...
Just got some price check on the 18-200mm VR is about $945
then my Jap trip already cost me bomb!!!

Lol for just a single lens, go for the 18-55mm. Don't worry so much:) Telephoto has its uses but for tours, I think the 18-55mm would suffice. For the closes focus length, 18-55mm wins the 55-200mm. For wide angle shots, 18-55mm wins 55-200mm. The lens which is ligher is 18-55mm. So just take the 18-55mm

You go on tour is to enjoy with (family?friends?), not to take the best photos you can and keep changing lens when the rest of them are having fun. You have a 50mm lens mounted on a 576 megapixel full frame sensor at 72FPS with unlimited storage. Not forgetting autofocus time is way faster than the fastest autofocus camera. Take photos for memories:) hope this piece of humble advice helps you

Your camera has a 1.5x crop right? If so your 18-55mm would be something like a 28-80mm kind of zoom lens which is suitable for MOST picture taking situations during travelling. I think you should enjoy your trip more than worry about your camera gear so your 18-55 will be more than enough IMHO. Afterall, I understand your trip is more of a holiday than a photography trip. So you should try to shoot more of your family having a good time and take group pictures with your family at various location. If you have your family with you, you should devote more time for them, enjoy the moment and scenery together with them. These are more important than those pictures. So remind yourself the purpose of your trip.

Afterall, your camera can only capture that much but your heart can capture everything about your Japan trip.

Cheers! ;)
