I still find the 50 1.4 more than sufficient for me shooting potraits:)

Hmm. strange choice of focal length, its great for candids, but it takes some discipline to learn not to crop too tight. Its always good to give your subject some working space instead of cropping to see just his/her face. I find my juniors especially susceptible to this.

Haven't experimented with a 50mm prime for portraits yet, so i still haven't established my style of shooting.

for your 400D, 50mm would give u a 80mm perspective.. similar to 85mm on a FF body. =)

What other lenses good for portraiture on a 1.6 crop?

50mm series from canon. The bigger the aperture, the further the distance between the subject and background, the nicer the background blur..

Other good recommendations would be the 24-85mm which is more economical.

The better zooms would be 24-70mm, 70-200mm f/2.8 or the 24-105mm, 70-200mm f/4.

Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 is another cheaper option wif f/2.8.

Think 85mm may be too tight for my liking. 50mm f/1.8 should get me started nicely on portraiture.

It depends, I prefer to use 85mm than 50mm for taking potrait pics (I have both).
The AF of 85mm is faster than 50mm and bokeh is very good.

Hmm looks like I will have to try both to know for sure. Thanks!

yeah.. simply beautiful bokeh from the 85mm f/1.8 =)

Bokeh is even more beautiful with 85mm f/1.2 L  :bsmilie:

of cos.. dreaming to get that one.. haha... not enuf Vitamin M for that.. only thinking of 85mm f/1.8 for now..

Say, between 85mm f/1.8 and 50mm f/1.4 USM (around the same price), which would you choose?

for your 400D body, i would choose the 50mm f/1.4 to achieve the 85mm perspective. For a FF body, i would opt for 85mm f/1.8. 85mm f/1.8 on 1.6x would be a little too long for portrait. =)
