Hmm. strange choice of focal length, its great for candids, but it takes some discipline to learn not to crop too tight. Its always good to give your subject some working space instead of cropping to see just his/her face. I find my juniors especially susceptible to this.
Haven't experimented with a 50mm prime for portraits yet, so i still haven't established my style of shooting.
What other lenses good for portraiture on a 1.6 crop?for your 400D, 50mm would give u a 80mm perspective.. similar to 85mm on a FF body. =)

Think 85mm may be too tight for my liking. 50mm f/1.8 should get me started nicely on portraiture. You can also use 85mm f1.8.
I use this potrait lens with my 20D.

It depends, I prefer to use 85mm than 50mm for taking potrait pics (I have both).
The AF of 85mm is faster than 50mm and bokeh is very good.
yeah.. simply beautiful bokeh from the 85mm f/1.8 =)
Bokeh is even more beautiful with 85mm f/1.2 L  :bsmilie:
Say, between 85mm f/1.8 and 50mm f/1.4 USM (around the same price), which would you choose?
Yes! exactly what I was thinking of too!
