Which is the best walkaround L Lens?

Which do you think is a better "all rounder" lens?

You are going to the Grand Canyon..... and asking why we like WIDE.....

Haha... but it's only 1 day at the hole in the dirt (Grand Canyon).... I would need the lens for life... (or as long as I keep my cropped body). And I have my Kit II 17-85mm for the "opps.. I need 17mm emergencies."

Looking at your lens line-up I don't see a need for any of these 2 lenses. But you have already some overlapping there that can be reduced or where lenses can be replaced with a f/2.8 version. It's rather difficult to have lenses where the focal length works on cropped sensor as well as on FF. Better focus on one body type and change later once you really go FF. No point piling up lenses "just in case"...

For a walkaround lens on APS-C, 17/18mm is almost a necessity. It translates to around 25mm on a FF. Else, you will find it really limited when you try to compose landscapes, capture streets, etc.

I switched from the EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM to the EF-S 17-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM precisely for that reason. I found that 24mm constrained my creativity. Now, I am actually upgrading to EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM and got myself a telephoto as well. In addition, I'm clearing out all my primes. I figured that all I need is the 17-55, a good 70-200, and a 100mm macro. That's it. :)

The IS on the 24-105 is immensely useful to someone like me with shaky hands. I would willingly give up one stop of light for that. Ofc, the best is if Canon produces a 24-70 (or 24-105) f/2.8 IS lens =p.

Ok. Who's upgrading to FF and selling their 17-55mm IS f/2.8? Please PM me. Haha....

We are going Off Topic....

IMHO, the best is if canon make 17-55mm f/2.8 L IS USM, i dare to say that it would be a lens that anyone wanted to have! cos i think the L one is so important for some people :p

There is already one. Canon just "forgot" to add a red ring around it. ;p

The real reason is the "EF-s" designation.

Very true....

just wanna share, my daily walk around lens is tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 and very satisfy with the lens, for it's value (1/3 canon 17-55mm f2.8 price), it's very great lens, the thing that disappointed me is just the focus sound is so loud and also now it has many dust inside the lens but it not effect the image captured

come to my gallery at www.picasaweb.google.com/marboed and see the lens results, the "Sengkang - Orchard" album i made not through the viewfinder, but by just placed the camera in my hip and press the shutter when walking around... it's truly my walk around lens..

i'm planning to upgrade to 17-55mm f2.8 since the overall quality is better

i am aperture freak...... i love to shoot wide open ... so i guess F2.8 is the ans

Hey, i just came back from the GRand Canyon in Dec. And i'm using canon 40D.

I didn't have the canon lens that was discussed here when i was there. Instead, i have the canon 10-22mm F3.5-5.6 and the tamron 17-50mm F2.8 lens. To me, while i was in grand canyon, i used the ultrawide a lot. I really mean a lot! The scene is magnificent that it the 17-50mm is not even enough!

If i were u, i wouldn't go out immediately and buy a lens for this trip. I would rent it for a the time of my trip and see how much i love it.

I fell in love with my 10-22mm even though it hasn't got a fast enough F-stop. But the whole trip i took, i was in the small plane, then helicopter and then down to the base of the Grand Canyon, the variable F-stop served me very well. My shots were sharp like i really wanted and with a little unsharp mask, it was Magnificent.

As i'm also gradually going into fullframe, i'm thinking of getting the 24-70mm F2.8 IS USM L-lens (Which i'm curious...i thought canon has that Is version for the 24-70mm?? maybe i read wrongly?). So, am glad i read this site.

If u want to see photos of my ultrawide angle lens, u can go to

You are looking for walk-around L lense right?

Then 24-105.
You can compensate F4 by using flash or upping ISO (whichever is acceptable) if the concern is light (I don't thing bokeh is the consideration since this is for walk-around, otherwise a prime lense may serve better). IS is one advantage that i myself find it very useful.

24-70 is very heavy, i am not sure if you want to bring it around often.

I agree with ClubSNAP-er - charmingorion - when he/she said that 10-22mm UWA would be great for super open landscape like Grand Canyon or like me.... the Rice Fields of Bali. ;)

But like TS saids..... He/She was more into looking for a 'Walkabout', everyday lens.... then a 1 day trip to grand canyon lens.....

TS.... got buget, go for EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS (sell your EF-S 17-85mm f4 IS)..... limited buget, keep using your EF-S 17-85mm f4 IS.......

I am quite happy with my 24-105 as my walkabout lens on my 450D. on the wide aspect, i dun feel a lot of loss, maybe because 24mmx1.6 = 38.4 which is roughly 35mm and its a focal range i am quite use to. but for some group shops when space is a constraint you will appreciate the 17-55,17-50 or 17-85 lenses.

My vote:

For general walkaround and shooting mainly landscapes and street scenes or travel, the 24-105 is very highly recommended. The IS helps immensely even in low light and the reach is useful. I prefer 3 stops antishake to 1 stop aperture advantage for this

For other stuff like portraits or people shoot, the 24-70 is better. Advantage goes to its potential for F2.8 bokeh and less distortion esp at wider end and one stop advantage to stop motion. (Actually the 70-200 may be better for street portrait shoots)

Otherwise i would carry 24-105 which can serve 80-90% of my "walkabout" needs.

Tried both 28-105 and 28-70 before. Unless, canon comes out with a 28-70 f2.8 L IS, the choice is still 28-105 for a walk about lens for its weight and reach.
