Which is Sharper ? or better ?

Just mount the f2.8L on your cam, walk up to a photog that is using the f4L, look at his lens and look back at yours. Put on a smug face and say " Size does matter" then walk away. It'll make you feel much better.

You talk like a woman who has seen it all!

I used to own both the f2.8 & f4.0 (both also non-IS) but I sold them to buy the f4.0IS. I was happy with it until I tried to shoot in dim conditions - then I found out that it is difficult for the lens to focus under this condition. Then I regretted selling my f2.8 because of low-light conditions. So what's the moral of the story? I don't know. You tell me. I think this thread can go on and on and on and no one will be the wiser. Sometimes you need the f2.8 and sometimes you don't! :dunno:

So true.. I have to agree with you. I own 70-200f4.. feels that it is no good indoor, got the f2.8.. love it but too heavy carrying it for a whole day.. sold it too.. now I have none :dunno:

Why have to do that leh :dunno:

Ask yourself this simple question.

Are you going to print out your images? If yes, what is the size? 4R, 8R or Poster size.

Any differences for 8R and above? very obvious?

Like so many others, I also had a hard time deciding between F4 IS and F2.8.
In the end i decided on the F2.8 non-IS cos I want that larger aperture for low light shooting. IS is great no doubt but it can't freeze motion.

The 70-200 F/2.8L is the "bread-and-butter" lens for photo-journalists so you can't go very wrong with that.

No regrets..

heehee.. I owned the F4 non-IS and F2.8 IS before.. now I am tempted to get F2.8 non-IS but worry it is hard to handheld.. cos heavy as well? What is your experience like? :sweatsm:

I got my lens just a month ago, so still learning how to handle it properly. Basically w/o IS meant that i have to pay attention to camera shake. Took a friend's church wedding recently...

Yes, its heavy (but then I used to handhold the Bigma.... its not a big deal).

So good hand holding techniques come into play. Just like the old days when IS wasn't invented yet. It is possible to go below 1/focal length shutter speed and still get sharp images. ;)

i tried that 70-200mm f/2.8, simply great lens. very fast n very good bokeh. =)

Having tried both and am equally impressed with the sharpness of both, but I am not sure how is their bokeh comparison. Bokeh of the f4 looks a little unnatural to me. Is the 2.8 bokeh much better?

I ever used a friend's F4L before and I can definitely say that the F2.8L bokeh is way better.

Is it necessary to get the 70-200 2.8 IS version?
I met this very nice guy at a shop before and he told me that no need IS eh.
He showed me his pics on his lappied, really damn nice. Adn I am tempted to get the one without IS but not now. Now, pocket big hole liao

One guy tell you this, another guy tell you that. At the end of the day, you become a more confused person.

It really depends on what situations you tend to find yourself in, what conditions you shoot under, and so on. It also depends on your handholding technique.

Actually i would think that getting an IS or non-IS is really up to you . If you can take a picture without hand shake then go for a non-IS , but the fact that most people will feel tired after a whole day of shooting so maybe at the end of the day you would wish you had an IS because your hand is soooo tired till you are unable to take a proper picture without shaking .

go for 2.8 IS version. i like the bokeh produced when i was using that lens.

There is a relatively cheap way to find out if you can handle the 2.8 non-IS, simply rent the lens for a day or two (less than $50) and go shooting.

I rented both the F4 IS and 2.8 non-IS, in the end decided that I better stick to a lens with IS first, because camera shake was detected in some pictures for the latter. Mostly the pictures towards the end of shooting, maybe because I was tired from the weight of the 2.8 non-IS.
