Actually i would think that getting an IS or non-IS is really up to you . If you can take a picture without hand shake then go for a non-IS , but the fact that most people will feel tired after a whole day of shooting so maybe at the end of the day you would wish you had an IS because your hand is soooo tired till you are unable to take a proper picture without shaking .

Just get a monopod, I use it every time, even on a full day shoot. I can shoot as low as 1/30sec @ 200mm and the pics is still sharp.
