Axela,
I hv been using SB800, though hardly use, but when i need it, I know it will fire precisely the exposure I need, never fail me. No regret lah.

The only regret is did not wait long enough for SB900.

Ha ha... long time no hear from u bro.....;p

Hi,

I have a D40 + Sigma 17-70,
i am thinking of getting either a SB400 or SB600,
i am leaning towards SB600 as it can rotate in both axis,
but it seems like D40 cannot fire the SB600 remotely.

any recommendation in this aspect ?

Thanks

the sb600 will be a better choice mainly because you have more freedom with the head.
the d40 cannot fire sb600 remotely because it does not have a built in trigger.
you can however, get a cheap radio trigger from the tago store.
as for the pc sync, the d40 also does not have the port, so if you want to use pc sync, you'll need to get a adaptor for your hotshoe mount.
sb600 does not have the port too. so you'll need the sb800.

Hi,

For example, if i want to fire the flash with my hand holding the flash unit,
i would need the "pc sync cable" rite ?
(one end of the cable goes to the camera slot while the other end goes to the SB600)
correct ?

no, sb600 does NOT have the pc-sync port so does ur d40. u probably need a sc-28/29 hotshoe ttl capable instead and it will works on all cameras and all the sb400/600/800/900.

I think SB600 will be nice. Served me well for the past few years ( I got 2 units, both dead by now ). You can use those China WireLess Trigger to fire the SB600 with manual mode on the flash no problem. And I think no point spending so much extra for SB800 as your D40 will not be fully utilizing the SB800.
