very comprehensively written. I choose the 24-105mm because i want the longer focal length and the IS, plus this lens can be used on a FF sensor. Value for money L lens for general purposes. =)

Agreed. There's the weight difference to consider as well. I use this on a 450D and I don't find myself missing the wide end that much, so you don't necessarily have to be on FF.

Because i really dun have enough fund for another lens
now my budget only 1700
after buy the lens i will stick to the lens quite long

I started out with 40D and 17-85f4-5.6. Then I stumbled across 17-55f2.8 and thought this lens is much sharper, brighter, colours and contrasts are better. I too thought that I will stick to my 17-55f2.8 for quite long.

I really really really like the 17-55 f2.8 and i miss it a lot. In fact, i somehow feel that my copy of the 17-55 is sharper than my present 24-70. but that is just personal.

I am not sure how 24-70 will perform on 40D as I sold my 40D before getting my 24-70. However, my 24-70 on FF produces sharper, brighter, more solid colours and contrast than 17-55 on my ex-40D. The 40D/17-55 produces good photos too and is probably the best for a crop camera.

What I have Currently:
Canon 40D. EFS 17-55mm f2.8 IS. Speedlight 580EX II. EF 70-200mm f4L.

What I'm Being Tempted to Switch To:
Canon 40D. EF 24-105mm f4L IS. Speedlight 580EX II. EF 70-200mm f4L.

What I Shoot:
- Group photos. Some portraits. Landscapes.
- I'd say 50% of the time, I am/will be shooting indoors
- Occasional night shots (usually with tripod)

I have a 40D/17-55 but am missing the 70-135mm range for portraits. So like you I acquired the 70-200 but find the range not useful with 40D. I think the solution to your situation is to change your camera to FF and 24-70. This way you will have 24-200mm coverage. However, you may need the 16-35 or 17-40 for large group shots.

Agreed. There's the weight difference to consider as well. I use this on a 450D and I don't find myself missing the wide end that much, so you don't necessarily have to be on FF.

consider PnS...light weight and can cover 10x optical zoom (equivalent to 350mm)

on a crop, u should probably consider the 17-55 over the 24-70. Myself I prefer the 24-105 for the reach, it's weight is also a big plus for its use as my main travel lens. If u want something for low light & extreme bokeh, could just get a nifty fifty for $100
