Where to get padded photo insert for backpack?

Hi folks,

Need your recommendation...

I am looking for a camera backpack but I am looking for one that I can also use for everyday purposes at the office. The Lowepro bags I saw have dedicated camera spaces which would be wasted space if I am not carrying the camera.

Another alternative is to continue using my current Samsonite business laptop backpack and to buy padded inserts for my D80, flash and lenses that I can fit into the backpack when I am bringing the camera around. The padded inserts will protect the camera and also help maintain the position of the equipment in the main backpack cavity. It should also provide for easy access.

Anyone can recommend another solution or some padded inserts you have bought and tried?

how about crumpler backpack that come with notebook sleeve type?

I tried going to CP and asked the guys abt the inserts from domke. But they kept telling me that it's for the domke bags only and that it wldn't fit into any other bag.

I use my backpack to carry by cam around and it's the best. But not having the inserts I'm worried abt my lens too.

Sorry, I am Nikon user so I thought I ask the advice of my fellow Nikonians who may have thought of a good solution for Nikon bodies, flash and lenses. Thanks for adjusting this.

OK, from the posting it seems that individual padded sleeves or inserts for camera equipment may not be that easily found. Hmmm, I wonder if I can custom make one..., some cardboards, some foam, nice black cloth, and get a tailor to sew it for me...
Shape of a rectangular box with the top end open but divided spaces for the D80 body with lens facing up, left side vertical section for zoom lens and a right side section for SB800 flash compartment...of course, extra padding at the bottom...

I think buy the padding from mekko or safrotto ? Sell at Camera workshop or Cathay i think ? Not sure, it is removeable. Otherwise u can make the padding urself,i saw some do that. May be u wrap ur cam with something soft like t-shirt,sweater...etc some students do that in order to carry camera around. For me, i use d50 with 18-200mm sigma, last time carry 18-70 with 70-300mm, i also like to carry camera around since high school, my solution is use the Mekko removeable padding, put it in my shoulder bag,can store document,sometimes laptop but will be less space, acutally i do that quite like mekko bag already but mekko bag quite heavy without the padding already,and not water proof and small, so

I will post some photo if u want, i think can buy this kind of padding second hand or at shop, do it yourself also possible , but remember to wrap the padding u make with tape, to make it have smooth surface.

haiyah.... i dun care... i know what i want and i just do it.... maybe the CP there familiar with me also so they dun try to discourage me much.

besides, what's to stop them from selling to you if you're really insistent. trust me, i've fitted them into my laptop bag as well as my backpack. nobody would've guessed that i was carry camera gear.

Give u some photo so more ideas. The padding quite small, i think can fit back pack.The side padding can collapse so if u need more space for document,seperate the lens and the body,collapse the side padding,it will take up less space,i usually do it when have document or need laptop.or can do like this, the side padding collapse to 2 side,put document in the padding also,the the body and lens in front of the document.My funny ideas.
This bag now i carry everyday,when go out shooting also cause the strap quite good, look like normal bag,slim so nobody know.


The padding,note the side padding cant take out but can collapase, dont like it may be u can cut out.

Compare with my bag. my bag is quite taller,the Mekko bag i think shorter than my bag.

Inside my bag, when push down completely will leave some space above.

My bag now,with the padding inside, look same with when i carry document, slim.

Hope this help. I also have Domke, i dont think it can use with other bag .

Thanks for your post, that is just what I was looking for. I actually managed to get some foam pieces before I saw your post. So you say Cathay or some camera shops actually sell just the itnernal padding without the bag? OK, I go look this weekend...

actually with the foam pieces u just use tape wrap around it after measure ur bag internal is can already. I'm not really sure Cathay have or not, but it floating in second hand market, try some shops in Peninsula plaza if u want. I still trying to find the post of somebody do the padding himself

i have a mekko A250...the inner padding just like tub with insert. u can remove the whole tub n put in any backpack if the size permitted.
