Saw it on display at Best VivoCity last wk at RRP.

I did tel a few shops previously just to check availability when I read some reports of shortages of some lens/cameras and normally a majority of the shops have what I asked. Maybe, I don't need the item so I don't feel the disappointment when I hear the "no stock" reply.

Actually, what are the causes of shortages? Really don't understand. Maybe because of :
1) Factory capacity too small
2) factory is small because it has no fund to expand, no fund because of poor sales and banks don't lend because of low prospect/ high risk
3) nothing/minimal leaves the factory because of quality problem
4) strategy of not to produce too many as too many will cheapen the product on the theory that scarcity produces a psychological effect that it is in high demand because it is good
5) actually huge stock exist but the manufacturer hold on to the deliveries to create a false impression that it is unable to cope up with the huge demand (the same way like they control the retailers on the pricing)

Any other theories on why there are shortages of things like lens and cameras?

am in shanghai now and staying at HaiYue service aptment, just opposite of it, they have this building tat houses all cameras and equipments (all 6 to 7 floors of them) most of the shops have them in stock, i did not ask coz not really interested in it. But for a 70-200 VR f2.8 it's cheaper than Sgp, so i guess 18-200 must b cheaper too

even there have...stock might not be available...now is worldwide shortage...

getting one in Japan, according to my friend there, it seems that Japan has quite an abundance of stocks for it...

Erm .. I got the opposite answer. Got some associates in Japan (who is into Photography n are Nikonians!) in Tokyo n Osaka, and both ave feedback to me that it is also out of stock in Japan, and extremely difficult to get due to overwhelming demand and short supply. Apparently next possble delivery in Japan is about mid December. Dunnio about SGP. I bought one SRP from Harvey Norman in the end.

Was in Shanghai a couple of weeks back. I think the building you are referring to is HongKong Plaza at HuaHai Zhong Lu? Saw a few of the 18-200 in stock, but was quoted SGD1400-1500, and they refused to budge on price...

May I ask how much it cost to purchase the 18-200 from HN? Do they sell extended warranty for it and how much for a 3 yrs warranty extension?

Confirmation for Japan. i just arrived this afternoon in Tokyo. Went to Yodobashi, and they said, need to place a reservation as no stock, and no date for availability:cry:

this is really crazy man...... buying at RRP is really ex......
i would never buy it at this price.... knowing that it should be selling cheaper....
just make do with other lens first... and save the $.....

anyway, it is only a convenient lens.... as for quality, still accepatable, but not the best....
so not really worth it to pay such a high premium for it....

Can anyone please clarify for me what is meant by 'Nikon Trinity"? thanks.

I know many of you are looking for this lens. I just came back from Sim Lim Square. Focuspoint at #01-43B has three of this lens in stock as at 12.30 pm and they are asking for $1,380. This is what they are asking and I am not sure if they are prepared to offer any discount. If you are interested, you may want to check this out.

One of the bigger camera chains here in Indonesia still carry ready stock. About SGD 1300 (slightly less now that the conversion rate is about 1:5800ish)

I was in Sim Lim Square at 12.30 pm today and the store, Focuspoint at #01-43B told me it has three of this lens in stock. They are asking for $1,380 which is above norm and I am not sure if they are prepared to lower the price. No harm checking it out if you really want the lens on an urgent basis.

Really meh,,tot no more stock in Singapore,,actually me saw 1 too at Takasyimaya #B1 photo shop, but selling at $1499(vormit blood)
