I won't answer 1 cos you didn't state your requirements clearly. What kind of lighting are you looking at? If you have no idea, I suggest you read this article on basic studio lighting.

Portraits:
180 Ws is ok for head/shoulders. Insufficient for full body.
For full body you should start with 300Ws or above depending on your needs. I recommend 400Ws for full body shots.

For products, 180Ws is more than sufficient for most reasonably sized items, unless you're shooting cars. And I mean real cars.

Based on yr needs, Simon's recommendation should fit the bill.

Personally, I'd recommend you start with one 300 Ws light and work from there rather than assemble multiple 180 Ws lights.

There are a couple of MOs for lights... PQ23 has one and there are a few "resident" dealers. Look under the MO section as well as consumers' corner for their ads. Avoid places like CP which do not stock budget models. (Or rather, their idea of budget isn't "budget" for the average hobbyist!)

One light is actually very versatile and it can be adapted and integrated should you decide to upgrade/experiment some more. 180Ws lights, while cheaper now, tends to have limited uses as you expand systems. And if you intend to use accessories, 180Ws really doesn't stand up that well to modifying unless you're handling small subjects at close distances.
