Unfortunately, a severe water catastrophe has occurred on your UNIX server system. The water main that runs through our data center building bursts and water begins cascading into server room I, jeopardizing a limited amount of UNIX servers. The UNIX server your account is located on is one of these machines. At this point, we must regretfully declare all data as lost.
Feature Price has chosen to restore the operating system on your UNIX server with new hard drives and hardware and inform clients about actions and reasons - and how to proceed.
This action, which has emergency-character (rather than being thoroughly planned), is that due to the massive hard disk water damage, its partitions on the server became corrupted. You will notice this by your website not being accessible via any service of any kind.
As your website is now inaccessible you and of course wish to receive an explanation. Please find the following summary of unlucky events:
<========================================>
@ Approx. 1220hrs: On the 9th of July your UNIX server was working properly.
@ Approx. 1245hrs: The water main that runs through our data center building bursts and water begins cascading into server room I, jeopardizing a limited amount of UNIX servers.
@ Approx. 1250hrs: Water to the building is cut off via the main shutoff valve located on the exterior of the building and employees are called into emergency status.
@ Approx. 0100hrs: System administrators begin arriving and assistants begin trying to relocate machines out of the "waterfalls" occurring in server room I.
@ Approx. 0130hrs: All servers are relocated and an assessment begins of what servers are recoverable and which are beyond repair.
@ Approx. 0155hrs: The situation is assessed and the servers that were recoverable are back online and operational. System administrators and assistants begin trying to recover data from the ruined hard drives, looking into many options for data recovery. Especially outside recovery sources were contacted.
@ Approx. 0330hrs; System recovery on machines is still being attempted. Trying different options while waiting on a response from a data recovery specialist.
@ Approx. 2000hrs; We have been contacted by the Data Recovery Center and they say there is good hope they can revive the harddisks that were damaged. They say they are 99% certain all information can be restored however, only time and patience will tell. They have notified us that the earliest time to recovery would be 8am and at the latest would be 1400hrs on 07/10.
24 hours later -
@ Approx. 1900hrs; The harddisks are still at the Data Recovery Center at this time on emergency status. We have been notified by the center they are working around the clock. We are expecting everything to be returned within 12/24 hours. If the Data Recovery Center cannot bring this information back to a stable state new servers will be put into place and accounts will be recreated. We are currently awaiting new information from the center at this time but do not have an ETA when this new information will become available.
36 hours later -
@ Approx. 1000hrs; After reasonable hopes however too much time past, data recovery specialists declare the hard drives that were not recoverable as "not recoverable in reasonable timeframe". This means that a recovery of these drives, one of which was for your server, can possibly take weeks.
@ Approx. 1035hrs: Your UNIX hosting server has been officially declared inoperable. Due to low chance of data recovery success and after days of waiting for data to be recovered, Feature Price restores the operating system and re-initates client hosting.
