What's the difference between erotic photography/art and porn?

To some religious zealots, even showing part of your feet is offensive. Everything to them is pornographic.

It's so subjective. Different people get aroused by different things. Some images are explicit, others are implicit, like when you view a scenery of twin peaks and a jungle below... well, you know what lah...

For most others, the simplest and most direct answer to "what is the difference between pornography and erotic photography" is:

"a very fine line".

One piece of art could be considered magnificent by person A while the same piece could be considered worthless by person B.

So the answer is, it is up to you the viewer to judge for yourself if the image you see is art or porn

porn is a piece of art that is meant to be interactive (think about it...) and it is under the umbrella of erotic art.

Being sensual doesn't have to mean being erotic. Many artforms deal with the idea of the sensual, without being erotic. look at dancing for one.

And the main thing about pornography that separates it from things like medical diagrams and such is the INTENT behind it. Was the creator of a work meaning to stimulate sexual reponses? A picture of a clothed woman can be absolutely pornographic, whereas a naked woman documented can be absolutely non-pornographic. A sex scene in a novel can be non-pornographic, but a Mills and Boons novel can be pornographic. Don't be distracted by people who will label something pornography based on how it LOOKS alone. There is a certain belief that labelling something as pornographic is to view that something as degratory, personally I'm not of that school of thought though.

and in my personal opinion, "erotic" vs "pornographic" is bull. The difference is that one person is trying to justify his softcore porn desire through masking it with artistic pretenses, whereas the other person is straightforward in his intentions (sexually stimulating images)

one more thing, I think using the "subjective" and "eye of the beholder" arguments in justifying something is an easy way out of not trying to analyze and dissect our reactions to artwork.

I am going to do a research project for academic purposes on Eroticism and Pornography in Art: Is the line fine, defined or irrelevant? Just wanting to get some opinions - since photography is an art.

1) Define 'erotic' (in the artistic/photographic sense).
2) Define pornography (in the photographic sense).
3) Erotic nude and pornographic nude - the difference?
4) What EXACTLY constitutes the 'private parts' / the 'dirty bits' / the 'naughty bits'?
5) Can a SENSUAL mood be conveyed without eroticism? or SENSUALITY NEED not be erotic but eroticism ALMOST ALWAYS have to be sensual?
6) Why are images from the Kama Sutra not considered pornographic (granted to some people they are)?

Sorry for all these cheem (deep) questions - but they are meant to be guiding questions - to set people thinking so that I can get some opinions - THANKS VERY MUCH.

It also depends on the viewer, art in western countries might be deemed porn in Singapore. And art in Singapore might be deemed porn in a more religious country. Sex education is not porn but it has to be explicit.
