What you hate about 7D?

inconsistent flash? can it be worse than canon?
Not sure about Canon 20D, but I am not happy with the 7D flash inconsistency. Maybe I should go and try out the 20D and compare.

How about these problems I've read in this and other forums? Have they been resolved or worked-around?

1) pre-flash causing human subjects to blink, leading to pics in which their eyes are closed
2) backfocus/inaccurate and "slow" AF

Not being a troll, am genuinely thinking of getting one as a second camera since prices have come down so much but the above 2 issues are holding me back.

BTW, I'm currently using a D70.

Any feedback greatly appreciated.

Mine's in the workshop right now for backfocus... finally decided it isn't me causing all those lost shots... :(

The pre-flash is an issue... it's a lot more obvious than the other brands around... but it's usually not a problem with most people... the work around is to tilt the flash and bounce off the ceiling or use a bounce card... this way, u work around the problem. I have only had a problem once... photographing my grandmother... she blinked everytime I used the 5600 HS flash... finally just tilted the flash up and the problem went away... have a feeling it's her age too... and also some people are very prone to reacting to the pre-flash pulse.

The back focus thing is a rather exaggerated problem... if u search this forum u will find that for all the 7D users here, I can recall only 3 users who have genuine back focus problems... fastshot is one of them and he solved it himself... (not recommended tho but he's something like a pro)... I have not had back focus issues... one thing to watch is the size of aperture u use.
The issue or erason behind many back focus problems or what was thought to be actually is that the focussing sensors on the 7D are much larger than the marks on the focussing screen. So in a large aperture, short subject distance closed-up type of shot, a small error gets magnified easily... generally only people who shoot slanted rulers and graph paper on walls find that they have 'back focus' problems...

The AF speed is undeniably slower than a lens with USM or the Nikon equivalent (sorry I cannot remember what the acronym is). Otherwise the AF is about the same speed except under low light for ordinary lenses without the motor assistance. Comparing lenses that are from the same brand manufacturer is not very useful as these lenses are made to very different specification even if all say 50mm f/1.7 on the outside... a fairer comparison would be to take a good quality 3rd party lens that comes in all 3 mounts and test them side by side... even then there can be difference in QC for all three lenses...
So the AF speed is definitely good enough but it can be much better... in fact the film 7 is much faster... so this is one point that the 7D is perhaps lacking... but it's definitely usable... u need to learn the camera...

Hope this lengthy post helps.

right now, i am still extremely utterly confuse in whether to get the KM 7D or 20D. so, i decided to post post here and ask the 7D users what you hate about the 7D. thanks for helping me make my choice.;)

Flash inconsistency and not as fast AF... but I can't think of using another camera... the one thing that really makes the camera useable is the superb control interface... pick one up and try it for yourself!

excellent feedback! thanks for taking the time to type such a lengthy post!

slightly out of point, but have any of you found any offical websites that comfirms the production of 7Di and 9D?

Sttill no announcement from Sony yet :(

My concern is the availability of future KM lens, flash and accessories. Otherwise, great camera for built quality and reliability in hot and very cold conditions.

:)

Check out PMA's website.... see whether Sony will announce anything or not... my feeling is that they will wait till Photokina to do a big splash... that's the more important photo exhibition...

Love 7D. Few wish list for features I am used to with other cameras that 7D lacks. I just borrow the 7D from my wife time to time. I guess no 9D is going to come out from Sony (so far anyway)
Missing features from what I am used to (mostly because I got used to Fuji S2 I have)
- No preview, don't save until you are OK with shot option (love when shooting landscape)
- Wish power button on was by the shutter like Fuji/Nikon
- No built in multi-exposure feature (at least not I know of)
- Really don't like the shutter sound (sound of mirror flap)
- Of course it is not 9 (missing metal body and weather proof)
But, there are many nice features in 7D I love than what I miss.

if i remember correctly, canon power button is worse... on the back... at least minolta can be switched with a thumb...

think only Nikon D2X & D200 have the multi exposure feature.

dunno leh, my frens say my shutter sound damn solid.. super silent... (cos i think the uncle at KMSC install a damper... think timberwolf also have it)

its metal body, just not weather seal... but definitely not weatherproof... dun think any camera is weather proof...

How much does it cost to install the damper? And how long does it take, wonder can it fix on 5D?

Just to update... just got my 7D back from KMSC today. Pretty good turnaround considering they should be swamped by now with last minute warranty claims before they close...

Now the focus is spot on and tack sharp. :)

So, if you think you got back focus problem, send in now... Sony SC may not do such a good job cos they might not be experienced with KM cameras yet...

Sorry, yes, I mean weather seal (not proof). It helps a great deal. My Fuji can't handle much of cold. Minolta 7Alpha (film camera) totally died around zero F temp while 9 had no problem which has eather seal.

Thanks for the correction. By the way, even though I rarely use multi-exposure in Fuji, it really works like LF camera.

Huh? How does weather sealing enable the camera to work at low temperatures? Your 7 died cos the batteries failed at low temperatures mah... nothing to do with weather sealing...

Just buy one and start shooting...

I take kid's party day in day out... preflash problem only happen 1 child in everyone 200 or more (assuming 20kids per party, 10 party a day). So the chance is really slim. But if it happen and it is important subject, set it to manual flash or bounce flash. problem solve.

Availability of the lenses and stuff I don't really worry about it... think about this.. if you go out now and spend money for 7D, 11-18, 17-35, 28-75, 75-300 (+maybe macro) with 5600HS. Do you think there is any picture you can't take? You are your worst enemy!!!

Don't blame gear if you can't get that pic, its not the gear, its you... once you go out from the stage where you blame yourself not getting that pic, you will learn more and improve more...

So stuff thinking and researching.. just go out and shoot... practice make perfect.

After 75000 shots on my 7D, it still going strong.. I am not sure why people are worry about little things. If my 7D died, well, I simply go out and get another one!

AF speed too slow, prefocus!!
Subject blink because pre-flash - use manual flash, bounce, shoot high ISO with ambient

Stop looking for excuse and go and enjoy it....

Sorry.. just had to let it out..
