What would you buy for D700?

Does it mean that if I have a non-DX lens like 28-70mm f2.8 on the new FX D700, I will have 28-70mm and not 42-105mm ?
Why Nikon want us to buy FX lens ? I'm very new to Photography. Please advise.
Nikon DSLR lenses* which are not DX are FX by default... technically, the 28-70 is never a 42-105, its just that on a DX camera it covers the same angle as a 42-105 lens would... but yes, the 28-70 on FX covers the angle of 28-70 on a film SLR...

*Nikon F-mount lenses for nit pickers out there...;p

n i thot nong nong argo, many were saying WHO NEEDS FULL FRAME :dunno:
well, which full frame are we talking about... full frame 645 medium format?... still dreaming of that... like I said elsewhere, full frame is a misnomer if not qualified by a size... FX as Nikon calls it is a better term cause there is a definite size attached to the name ;p

yup.. it's full frame, so it's like shooting on film camera. Well, most of the full frame lenses are old lenses made for film camera except for the newer ones like 14-24mm, 24-70mm, which are mainly made to cater for FF DSLR. These lenses often are better built (unlike those plastic G lenses), better optics (more expenses glasses or in most cases, more glasses) and naturally cost more.

Looking at the trend, i think it's really worthwhile buying FF lenses as the likelihood is FF is the way to go for the serious amateur and professional market. Also, with the introduction of new and better DSLR, i think lenses hold value better than Camera. I think going forward, people will have to change/upgrade camera every 2-3 years but lenses, especially the better ones will last much longer.

I would buy some decorative stickers to put on the camera and a loud speaker to tell the world that I am using a FF camera ...........

If you are a Landscape or Portrait shooter, choose FX for wider view and better bokeh. But if you are a Birder or Macro shooter, take the DX for the 1.5 crop. If you need low noise to shoot events, take the FX anytime due to its larger sensor.

No doubts the FX can use DX lens, but it will reduce the mp to half of what D300 can offer. A gear head will still buy a FX irregardless of uses and join the band wagon for his collections. :bsmilie:

Thats a shame, its one of the best lenses ever made by nikon!

You must be kidding (if you are referring to the Nikon 24-120 VR). On paper, it looks like an ideal walkabout but I bought it and sold it shortly after. Not impressive at all - contrast wasn't good and a bit soft at wider apertures. I am not the only one - you can find lots of unflattering comments on this lens which desperately needs to be updated

interesting.. some say the lens is very good like wildstallion while others says its really no good. perhaps others can share a bit of their experience on this?

Based on what I read years ago, this is one of those lens that comes bundled with a mix bag.

Those that were lucky got apples. The unlucky few (there're quite alot) got lemons.

Still. This AF 24-120mm VR proves to be a very useful range for FX.

Maybe Nikon will come up with an improved version next year ... to be coupled as a kit lens for a 'consumer level' D70 FX perhaps :)

When I switch at the end of the year:

14-24mm (definite)
85mm f1.4(definite)
35mm/50mm (Im trying to figure out which is a better everyday focal length for me)

+ grip
+ RRS-L plate
+ extra battery
+ Cable shutter release

for normal shootaround, 50mm 1.4 shd be the best choice. 85mm 1.4 is very good if u shoot a lot of portraits. I will prob add in a 24-70 or 70-200 as well.
