With the D700 releasing soon, i am wondering what lens should pair off well with this camera?

I may be making a trip to HK and can pick up a lens or two but since D700 is a FX camera, does it mean that getting a DX lens will not be suitable at all? I do recall it can switch to DX mode iirc.

Any advice greatly appreciated.:)

DX cropping mode
The Nikon D700 lets you select from either FX format (36 x 24) or DX format (24 x 16). At the default setting of [Auto DX crop], the camera will automatically select DX format when a DX NIKKOR lens is attached.

You CAN use DX but the questio nis should you?

You should read up on this site for more details about the D700. http://www.nikon.com/about/news/2008/0701_d700_01.htm

It's like buying a wide screen monitor that can display up to a wonderful high res 1680 x 1050 but you set your Window screen resolution to 800x 600 for your viewing. What an overkill heh

Yeah, i am aware of it. I think the only situation i would probably use DX mode is when shooting far subjects that requires additional pulling power.

Went through the reviews quickly and i think the lenses thats suitable for D700 is prob 18-35mm (17-35mm afs too exp and heavy, also fixed aperture for wide angle not crucial), 28-70 AFS (if can afford, i'll prob skip and use my old Tokina) and 70-200 VR (must have i think if you shoots a lot at this range.). Other lens are prob 16mm fisheye, 50mm f1.4.

Taking a leaf out of "lsisaxon" helpful informal test in these forums (thank you), it would be wise to look into the newer lenses such as the AFS 14-24 f2.8 and the AFS 24-70mm, the AFS 60mm macro, etc ... especially so if this be your first "big"purchase.

Having said that, I am sure (NO, let me re-phrase -- I HOPE) that later fx Dslrs has some sort of algorithm built-in that takes care of existing lens softness (light fall-offs at corners, etc).

If they can come up with a clever DX-crop, I don't see why they couldn't make do with some clever "in-built lens correcting module". (google DXO Optics PRO).

Perhaps, further down its roadmap.

Nevertheless, if you start from scratch, be very happy. :)

the thing that puts me off lens like 14-24 is that you cant attach a filter, which make it less useful for WA lens imo. The AFS 24-70mm i have no doubt will be the best money can get... and it really is costly, i think abt 2700 in SGD? as for AFS60mm, i dont really see the need to get a fixed 60mm lens. If i want more natural environmental portrait, i would go for 50mm f1.4, if i want normal portrait lens, i would go for the 85mm f1.4.

I have seen pics taken off the new AFS 14-24mm; it really blow you off. The lack of filter usage is a small sacrifice.

I already have the 17-35mm and am saving for this new baby. Doesn't mean that the two can't co-exist.

The 85mm f1.4 should do couple well with the fx cam as it's a specialised lens in itself. i.e. corner softness (already with a DX cam at f1.4-1.8) is again a small sacrifice to what it can out-do many other lenses in many other areas (being a specialised lens, that is).

They already have algorithms to correct lateral CA and vignetting... As for softness..... Hmmmmmmmmmm............... I think that's going to be tough.. and if they really do that, no one needs to buy Carl Zeiss and Nikkors anymore.. any kacang putih lens will do just fine... ;p

Add the 300 f/2.8 and the 200-400 f/4 to that list...

Collect them all!! I'd rather buy a DX body to use with the longer lenses.. ;p
