First thing, don't blame the camera or the brand if you cannot get the results you want. Second thing, be patient about your learning on photography. The learning curve is steep for a newbie, but with patience, determination, lots of reading and shooting, you will gain experience and you will get good pictures.

Finally, have fun shooting. :)

v true

can anyone explain to me what's the use of the UV filter?

In the past when people are shooting with film, it's used to reduce haziness created by ultraviolet light. Since people are moving on to digital nowadays, the UV filter is more of a protection for the lens now.

For me, playing dslr is never cheap. But indeed the camera body eg. a700 is cheaper than other mid end dslr like eos 50d and d300 and they are equally good.

Pentax is other brand which is cheap and good 2, but i won't choose it as pentax doesn't have ff.

There is another important reason that i choose sony as I can use the old and cheap Minolta lenses on the camera body, and it works perfectly ok.

However, I am also willing to try other brands, like Nikon low end products, e.g Nikon d40. It's a camera with reputations 2. :)

Before I jumped to SLR, consulted few of my friends (all users of Nikon and few Canon) Everyone suggested to buy Nikon. But myself and my friend took risk! and brought A100. After using for almost years+, I still learning. But I don't have any experience of using other brands, I like Sony very much. My first Sony CD walkman brought 10 years back still working including headphones!! SONY the BEST!!

I like this topic , sorry backtracking to this old thread as haven been on CS for a while.

Yeah pple asked me hell lot of times why Sony , not C and not N. When I bought my A350 , its a fate really. Firstly , I had a chance to try out the camera at Sony Style , found the camera menus almost intuitive and similar to my H10.

I didnt want to follow the masses for C or N. I didnt like the interface for C and N as well. Hence ease of use was one major factor.

The other bit was pricing , A350 dual lens kit was competitively priced against 450D and 40D . PLus , the brand Sony gave me the confidence haha. I know Sony likes to win. I have seen how they always come from behind and lead the pack. Bravia is a good example. PS3 is another , when it first launched there were so much complains , but now , its leading the other 2 consoles already.

I didnt know nuts , that the Alpha mounts were inherited from Konica Minolta at first. So I am definitely one of the less informed buyer for the DSLR at first.

Using the camera for a year now , I have no regrets. Great handling , good IQ . I even shoot at ISO 3200 and 6400 at occassions. With some post processing , all pictures turn out pretty ok.

To sum it all , it has been exciting to see the Alpha line up grow from 4 models ( 100, 200, 300/350s , 700s) to 900 , 850 and 500/550s. Hope to see more segmentation in the Alpha line ups for the middle to higher end models in the future ! Hopefully , this would encourage the 3rd parties lens manufacturers to make more alpha mounts lenses !

Actually 3rd party lens maker are coming out with lens for alpha mount just that it's not usually released on the initial batches. Both sigma & tamron do have wide range of lenses available.

Yeah . But hoping the range of lenses could be as wide as C and N =)

1) in body stabiliser so it will probably translate to savings in the long run when buying lens

2) minolta legacy, one of the longest and best around

3) had a sony 828 before the alpha and so far sony technology suits me well

4) last but not least, the grip on alpha100 was the one of the best that time and i find it really comfy

:D

For the alphas there's legacy minolta lenses that covers the ranges on the C & N counterparts & are cheap to get.

When I decided to get back into photography Sony had just brought out the first really affordable 10MP camera, A100. For the price I was able to afford the lenses I needed to cover the range of photography I wanted to try. The A100 did very well. When the A700 arrived on the scene I liked the added and improved functions that raised it closer to the Pro level. The A700 was a workhorse that never let me down. When the A900 came out I was already hoping for a FF camera to better match the image control I had with 35mm film cameras. I had no qualms upgrading to the A900 due the dependability of my previous Sony cameras. I not only upgraded the camera, but I also upgraded all the glass to the Zeiss and G series. I've had the A900 for two months and it has been a joy to use.

maybe this is true if you're buying 3rd party lenses, not true if you're buying sony G/CZ lenses all the time.

this is true, a lot of minolta gems around
=)

haha i cant afford G/CZ lens all the time anyway :bsmilie:

To be honest, i find the Alpha way too simple in terms of features :(
Some may find it good as it too simple, nothing faciful to play with though. I has a SX1 and it was way alot more features thatn the Alpha.

Just a question, is there any DSLR that has the colour replacement function? My wife went to the canon course and they teach her how to highlight a colour and shot, all the background is B/W except for the colours selected

Shouldn't this be post processing work? its not much tedious in post processing, and u dun have the hassle of taking ur attention away from the important job of capturing the precious moments and looking for the right perspective.

Hahahah, I suggest you buy Cannon since u like more function and color set mode, for me i just like the the camera wat they can offer. May be if u like can go for a photoshop course for this setting and even more others and change of head as well into a monster.Photshop do wanders bettrer than any camera ,make by itself.:D

Because it's cheap and decent. And I am a typical Sony-is-reliable kind of guy. And I want to be different too, not like some of the C & N users criticizing Sony for being young in this industry and therefore, Sony can't have good cameras as compared to those AF motor-less D60 etc.

Answer is simple: Minolta G.

Unless until Canikon are able to produce lenses of such caliber, and keep up with the innovations of Minolta/Sony engineers that constantly surprises us, or else they will never leave their mark in history as prominent as Minolta.
