What made you buy an Alpha over the other brands? (tua-pau, nikon, etc)

i anyhow choose that time; because my A200 is one of the most affordable price camera i could afford at that time...now i am stuck with a collection of lenses...and recently, i fell in love with the ISO3200 noise ..lol

nice! well, i'm not sure if there is any entry-level cameras that can handle noise well at ISO3200, but from your pics, under that lighting, it is acceptable.

I think Alpha is value for money. Affordable body with good performance(I've said this at another forum). I remember some years ago, Sony displayed their products at Citylink, just outside HMV, the dslr displays attracted my attention. I saw it, but I didn't think I could afford it. Thankfully, dslr prices have been falling, now I can afford one .

actually , just focus on your composition...each brand has their strength and weaknesses...but the fact is some people just buy the brand (some even getting high end FF), yet they still shoot in auto mode.

1) because i can use AF Carl Zeiss lenses ! u can bet your last dollar on Carl Zeiss optics power !

2) Sony Electronics is a big supplier of electronic components to other brands DSLRs :bsmilie:

3) personally, the user interface of Alpha system is more user friendly than other brands,

4) Sony video cam technology is widely adopted in TV media industry, thus future DSLRs with video is expected to be very good.

5) Sony is pro-active in users engagement and support.

6) Service Centre @ Wisma is very efficient and friendly.

... and i think so much more to discover.

dun follow or listen to the crowd or salesman, judge the picture quality in sites like flickr.com (u can search) and also test out the gears for yourself at the shop.

at the end of the day, it is still the man behind the camera :)

It's fate! But i still get weird stares when i tell other photogs i'm using sony. D:

Can anyone advise on Sony's 28mm f2.8, 50mm f1.4 and 100mm f2.8 price? Am giving it some serious consideration here.

I have no regrets getting a sony.

The amount of 2nd hand Minolta lenses (Beercan, minolta 1.7) that is affordable and has superior quality makes Sony one of the better entry level brands around. Not to mention the CZ lenses!

I remember reading about an active group on the internet that calls those people the 'canikon' bunch or something cause canikoners automatically assume that cannon/nikon cameras are the best in slrs.

This group is actively trying to debunk that myth

1. Minolta legacy
2. Finer things, better finish/materials
3. AF Zeiss only at Sony
4. In body IS
5. Shutter sound and ergonomic of A900 reminiscence of medium/large format
6. Undervalue ;)

Value for money
functions available for an entry level
fast live view when you need it

show them the photos first, and then reveal the brand ... ;)

many dun believe me .. until they see the photos again :bsmilie: times had changed ! digital age already ! we are no longer living in the film era ! who holds the electronics secrets hold the key to the digital future !

Point 6 is soooo true. Service Centre @ Wisma is efficient and friendly plus convenient.

I've been there once to service a 18-70mm lens that jammed plus I've been to Canon near Harbourfront to service a faulty 28-105mm lens. Comparing their service hours and location, Wisma is definitely more convenient.

Explain?

actually, true in some sense. You don't get Carl Zeiss lenses at such prices, in fact German-made lenses are known to be expensive, premium like Leica on the international market ..

just want to add some my personal experience with Sony DSLR (appologize me if what i shared is not so ideal or have some mistake)

sometimes, i just wonder why other friends (who use other brand) underestimate with Sony DSLR. Sometimes what they said / mentioned directly or post at some forums a bit over and personally i feel that is somekind of "not so welcome" for sony DSLR. i always mention, what ever the brand of camera, the more important thing is that we should feel comfortable + happy with that. Personally i am satisfied with sony DSLR in many aspects (user friendly, giving many oppurtunties for me to explore more in doing photography, i feel comfort with the fitures and the results, good CS, etc). Hahaha....might be it takes time for Sony DSLR + Sony users to be more welcome in many forums. Until this moment, i still receive some opinions about "not so welcome" because of the brand. To get and to become more positive, i think i should become more positive in many ways (not by argueing emotionally with them but try to find what makes they feel / think like that and hopefully i have a chance to prove what the real things are). Personally, it becomes an interesting challence for myself to learn more, explore more in doing a better photography. Need more effort and hard work to show and to prove the power of Sony DSLR. I believe someday Sony DSLR will be more welcome and get more appreciation ;p

I'm thinking of what Dearchivism just said.... would things be different if our cameras were still known as Minolta A900, A850, A700 or Dynax A900,... instead of Sony?

Actually not many people know about the legacy that Minolta transferred to Sony.

those people who get upset are those who seen better photos from another brand while their photos are so so only, and they cannot accept it after investing the money and faith, and it is deemed as " blasmephy " to their beliefs passed down by tradition and majority ... the advertisements said so... mr professional said so... my friends said so... so it becomes like everyone said so and it must be the truth. But have they themselves tested it to find out ?? the answer is usually no ...

the salesman spend hours and hours at the shop, all he sees is product samples, catalogs, and price guides and he will pray more to close deals more than to win a debate on which brand is better, has he used and tested them in shoots ? then answer is usually no... maybe using AUTO mode loh :bsmilie: he will preach to win a buyer based on what he know best from mouth of most people loh

I believe most people, especially in the SLR community, know that Sony bought over Minolta.

Thing is Sony is known as a premium brand. That's its strength and weakness. The SLR community aren't exactly (no offence please..just an obseration ok...) the lifestyle type of people. They feel that brands like Sony are superficial and overpriced.

I guess it's a bit like apple in a sense. Many people are anti-apple and pro-orange just coz they view apple products as a superficial fad. But, when you really look into apple products, there really are a lot of good things going on for them eh?

Well to some as long as it's not C / N = not pro. But no point arguing with these people as they either pixel peep or even go all the way to comment on shutter noise.

But back to topic my reason for choosing sony are as follow

- Not the ordinary mainstream system in the market
- CZ glass that has AF
- cheap & good minolta glass
- cheapest FF out now
- in body IS
- tough body that is built to handle some knocks & rough shooting conditions
