What lenses you own?

Actually, the limiteds are great simply for shooting too. They're so small and light and discreet that I feel they work best for certain circumstances (hiking, travel, street and so on).

I've never felt constrained or inconvenienced shooting with a set of primes. Missed shots? Take too long to swap lenses? Etc. Not really issues. It's a matter of shooting style in the end.

And this is coming from a guy who used to happily zoom in and out all the time with a 12x zoom prosumer compact before making the leap to DSLR! :P
Opps, I just got where you are coming. Yeah, I forgot to add that the primes are good for shooting on top of being great collector items (I assumed it's a given, lol).

Ha, I felt a bit restricted using the primes for events mainly. For streets and travel and walk-arounds, I am still ok with the primes. Side-track: I think the DA21 is probably the best mount-on prime for travel. Sometimes I simply choose one prime and could probably shoot the whole day with it and all shots end up having quite the same perspective. I do not quite like switching lenses too.

I agree about constraints using primes for events.. and that's why I keep my K100Ds as my 2nd body for event shoots. :D

So for events, I use:
K100Ds + DA21 or DA35
K-7 + DA70

For everything else, one camera + 2 or 3 primes, with one prime on it most of time.

And hey, I tend to do the same on travels.. stick with a certain prime all day long. It works surprisingly well, maybe cos I am too lazy to switch lenses that often! :bsmilie:

Go for the 50-135 first. 200 is secondary. Both are very very good lenses. the 16-50 is a mixed bag however, kind of like the weak link in the Pentax zoom line-up.

DA35 is a fine choice. I don't quite use it for day-to-day walk around shots thou as I have other lenses to cover the range. It's very suitable for product shots and copy work. Not that great for bugs and flies though cos its very short.

thanks.. so 50-135 it is .. frankly I am also more for 50-135mm up till now. akan datang ;)

I agree. Events with primes need two bodies. I cracked my brain over which prime to use with one body, from 20-50. Eventually settled for a ~30. Worked pretty ok and was glad i made the choice. Any narrower would be quite restricting for a one lens solution. But I would really go for a 21 and 50 for events if I could afford to carry two bodies. I find it hard to juggle them around.

Yes. Its the best DA* zoom. Best. Razor sharp throughout its range. Never heard any complains of it. And there is also a recent price drop after EMjay took over the distributorship. You may check the price list. Very attractively priced.

Zooms
======
Sigma 10-20
Sigma 28-200
Tamron 28-75/2.8
Pentax DFA55-300

Primes
=====
Soligor 17/4
Kiron 28/2
Pentax FA 35/2
Cosina 50/1.4
S.Tak 55/1.8
Jupiter9 85/2
S. Tak 135/3.5

Configured to go either zooms or primes.
I'm quite happy with the primes though as they perform well and did not cost a bomb to accumulate, serving as a 'play' 'play' portion of the hobby.
Too many lenses already esp. lately kena 85mm and 77mm poison. :p
Looking at the list again, it seems I lack a 100mm and a macro lens .....decisions ....decisions....

Wow.. what a collection

Never heard of S.Tak, kiron and Siligor, are they Russian lenses? M42?

s tak = pentax super takumar. newer version is the SMC takumar with pentax SMC coating. these are M42 lenses, metal build, smooth manual focusing.

soligor and kiron i'm not sure, may be PK or M42 mount??

great thing abt pentax is that it retains quite a lot of metering functionality with these old legacy lenses.

thanks. does any of these lenses have automatic aperture.

I realized there is lot of fun lenses that come with the K mounts and M42 w/ K adapter. that is the good things about 30 years of keeping to the same mount.

i doubt the soligor and kiron have (might be wrong). in tt case, have to press green button for stop-down metering.

M42 lenses are surprisingly easy to use. you can use Av mode with full-time metering. might have to dial in some EV comp or maybe the K-7 has solved that problem.

Off hand recollection

Travel set
21/3.2 28/3.5 43/1.9 70/2.4 (usu 3 out of the 4), 10-17 FE (if going landscapes), 100 or 135/3.5 (macro / tele), A300/4 (if there is going to be birds / wildlife), 1.7x tcon

event or alternate zoom kit
16-45/4, sigma 70-210/3.5-4.5, 50/1.4, vivitar 28/2(now staying on my G1), 200/2.5

Birds / Butterfly
Telescope, vs1 105, kenko tubes, 1.4 or 1.7x tcon, FA300/4.5

Think there is some more for the pk set alone. Heng the only thing left i want to add for pentax is the 15/4 which is too bloody ex......

hmmmm i saw someone near my workplace scouting for the DA15 ltd quite recently...

Ha...ha... the real LARGE collection ppl never post only ;)
Will take too long to type :D

Like others said, the
S.Tak = Super Takumar = mainly M42 mount (don't bother with the Super Takumars with K mount)
Kiron (Japan 3rd party); mine is in Kmount
Soligor (Japan 3rd party) ; mine is in M42;
Jupiter is Russian (M42 mount)

M42 lenses are surprisingly easy to use. you can use Av mode with full-time metering. might have to dial in some EV comp or maybe the K-7 has solved that problem.

Think better but not solved on the K-7. Some lenses now meter ok in Av mode, others seem to need less +EV compare to my K100D

As much as the DA* 50-135mm gives good images, it can feel not long enough at the tele end. I personally think the DA* 60-250mm is an even more versatile lens. Certainly trying out Mark D's copy, the image quality is superb and focusing is maybe even a little better than the DA* 50-135mm. But at almost S$2K...

My tip: buy lenses according to angle of view. With newer designs, zooms can come close to primes in image quality, and can surpass it in convenience, especially when shooting from a fixed location or it is impossible to zoom with the feet.

I was looking at DA*60-250mm f4 too but sadly S$2K will be a tough one to go bite  and I think the size of either DA*50-135 and DA*200 as well as price will be easier one :(

Alternatively, hold out until the DA 55-300 "WR" version is available. :dunno:

my stuff:

1) sigma 10-20
2) pentax kit lens II
3) pentax 50mm f/1.4
4) pentax 35-80
5) tamron 70-300
6) tokina 28mm (some old manual lens)

that's it, i think

DA*16-50/2.8
DA*50-135/2.8
DA 55-300/4-5.8
covers the most useful FLs.

My skill level is not high enough that I can utilize primes properly, so I'll stick to zooms for now..more bang for buck (unless someone wants to generously donate to me, a FA77 or FA31:bsmilie: )
