17-85 is a good walkaround and it's cheap. Sold mine second hand around 4++ only. The range is good, IS and USM helps

i personally don't think its worth the upgrade from 18-55 to 17-85, as the IQ is about the same. it may have a longer range and focus a little faster, but not worth that money to upgrade.

hmm... but the problem is that its not fast enough? TS stated he wanna use it for his holidays wad... if u go take like night markets, museums, and stuff i dun think its fast enough for it... f4-5.6 i find it crippling;D

then u go museums u cant use flash most of the time... someting to do with objects decaying faster with flash.

i own a 17-50 tamron, used 18-55 is in my school. find that 18-55 is slow but still acceptable. i would recommend u to take 17-50. its cheap and affordable with a constant aperture. good enough for u.
if u want that extra reach take the 55-250 is?:D

my thoughts:lovegrin:

ps: u said indoors activity like concerts right? :DDD 17-50 tamron is ur good friend. fast enough to shoot at low lighting:D

-.- ITS U CORNY... i thought u said choy had some lenses to sell u? o.o

errm my budget is just around $600 bucks yeah. No way to get L or 17-55 IS.
As for the zoom range im quite comfartable with 17-50 cause i have my 55-250 for zoom.
But the 28-75 Tamron may cover abit more just that i cant do wide angle with it.

Not sure which one to choose between now.. 17-50 or 28-75.. :(

corny pretty no point ar... u lose out on ur wide angle and u already got 55-250 to cover that extra reach that u need...?

well unless choy sells u that lense at a price of abt 300 bucks and below. ;D

...
I specialize in indoor photography like concerts and would also use it as general purpose lens for holidays or outings. How is the quality of these lenses and which can be said to be the best?

Read his first post!

He need it as a general purpose lens for holidays!

I think we all need to take the complete sentence in context. :nono:

lol i ask for condition and price liao. choy havent reply.
ya i know dun wan lose out wide angle so damm sian.

hmm. seriously get the 17-50 tammy. then our sch concerts u know all can use flash one. so far i only SE concert no flash allowed. so ur 18-55 is really good enough. flash + that lense can use lar...

dun look down on ur lenses k?

;D

Assuming u are on crop cam and low budget, the Tamron would be a good suggestion. If money not an issue, go for the canon, fantastic glass with 'fantastic' price tag. Forget the sigma or tokina equivalent, not value for money in terms of sharpness, etc...

TS sorry to hijack your thread for awhile. like you i was considering what lens to buy to replace my kit lens. and it all boils down to 3 choices for me now.

1) Tamaron 17-50
2) Canon EF-S 17-55
3) Canon EF 24-105L

I would like to ask CSers here, is Tamaron 17-50 usable on a full frame body? or it is like EF-S lenses?

nope... Tammi lens not compatible with FF bodies... so getting EF or EF Zoom is a good investment if you plan to move on to FF.. but then again.. Tammi 17-50.. lotsa ppl will buy also... so not that bad if you wanna move onto FF later on..

oops.. i could be wrong here..

You will get dark corners at all focal lengths. No point.

How about Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5? Gives u the extra cover u need, wide angle, pretty good reviews i see...comments?

How to compare 24-105 and the other two? If you need the reach, then its the 24-105. If not, and you can afford it, get the 17-55. Otherwise, its the 17-50 lor.

evilorgi wad body u using? for me 450D nia. so considering the Tamron. 17-55 Canon too expensive liao.
Need to rob bank den can...

Also 24-105 is presumably F4 right? not F2.8 so low light shooting may have a little problem.
Get a quote from MS Color AMK first.

tamron 17-50, or canon 17-55 if budget allows.

no need a 16-35 for APS-C

17mm and 24mm on a crop body is quite significant. Can see from LCD how much u losing out already. I took photos to compare thats why i took the wider lens on my crop body. Unless ur FF then 24mm is ok.

k er. corny u wanna post some photos of wad u take here? then we know wad type of photo u take one. easier to see wad lens u need

then seriously no point getting 24-75 tamron unless ur ff cause ur wide side lose out a lot.

but then on the other hand u can take more facial shots...

hmm shld i get that lens from choy if ur not getting?

considering...

to TS,
know your needs and buy whatever best suits you.
PS: BBB virus very high in here... ;p
