depends on what kit! 17-85 IS and 24-104 F4L are bundled as kit lenses sometimes and they cost ~$800 and >$1k respectively.

thanks all for the advice! will consider getting kit lens first before getting my second lens.

Should i get a 3rd party, or canon?

And if i have my kit lens (18-55) then i wouldn't need to get a lens that is able to take wider picture, UNLESS i am very interested in taking scenery , landscape etc. ?

And i was wondering if i get EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. Will i be able to shoot indoor? or abit hard.

depends on how much space you have indoors.. prob find yourself pressed against the wall most of the time if space is tight..

canon - 17-85mm or 24-85mm.

third party would be tamron 17-50mm f/2.8.

i have set aside around $1.5-1.6k.
850 for 2nd hand body. got around $600 for lens. do you guys still think it's better to get a kit lens first? or can i get other lens. advices needed please.

600 - i would get 24-85mm. or else i would save up and get 17-85mm.

Higher end option would be 17-55mm.

for future FF upgrade, i would choose 24-105mm followed by 24-70mm when i have saved up more. =)

I have this lens so i can tell you it depends a lot on how much space you have to work with.

if you're shooting concert halls, auditoriums, etc, no problem.

but if you're in a small room you will need a wider lens.

or do you people think i should get a kit lens first, as it can also be use for all purpose.

then if i'm sure of which lens to get, then get it probably few weeks later or something. probably 28-105?

the price diff between 28-105 and 28-135 worth it?

Seriously, avoid the 28-105. You do not need that length.

The kit lens, 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 (see if they can change it to the USM ones) or the 17-85 IS USM f/4-5.6 is very much sufficient for your needs. The 17-85 would be your all-purpose lens. It's a great walkabout lens at the cost of image quality.

17-85mm is gd for limited budget.
24-105mm is gd lens and can save money when upgrade to FF body. IS and 105mm range are plus points. =)

hmm? i was thinking if after getting kit lens, i'll get the 28-105. which is good for shooting events too. i think.

FF body, FF means?

FF means full frame...

depends on wat type of events u want to cover...if want to take models and car shows...maybe shld take fast lens like Tamron 17-50 F2.8...fits your budget of $600 too...

Er.....actually 17-85mm the image quality not that bad. I doubt one will be able to see a difference between 17-85mm VS 17-55mm IS from 24-55mm range (if at same aperture).

Most of 17-85mm's weakness can be tweaked by photoshop. Wide angle range, 17-85mm distortion quite a bit. a 10-22mm will help.

agree that the 17-85 image quality is not that bad :) was pretty amazed by the details it captured during a recent fashion show in zouk.

Full Frame = 35mm film = 36 x 24mm sensor size. =)

for events, if you can move in closer to the subjects, u can do it with 18-55mm or 24-85mm. Otherwise you may need longer range like those 200mm range. =)

i considered that lens before when i was using a 1.6x body. Value for money Canon lens. =)

if you can spare the cash, go for the 28-135. I assure you, you won't regret it. it has a bigger filter diameter (translates to better IQ), better optical quality (again, better IQ) and a very solid build.

but the 28-105 isn't a shabby option either, it makes a very good affordable walkaround especially if you're on a budget. my school has 3 copies of this lens, used extensively for event coverage.. Do get the f/3.5-4.5 version which is the better variant.
