maybe can consider 50 1.8?
actually i'm prefer 50 1.4
it looks very sharp in 1.8(50/1.4)

play with kit 18-55mm first. on a cropped body, u can do landscapes, candid shots and portraits. meanwhile save up for a better lens like 17-85, longer range and usm and is package is a gd advantage. =) even i start off with a kit.

Yeah. cept that he "need to buy a lens, probably a all purpose zoom lens"

Though I agree the 50mm f/1.8 is a really good lens to start shooting with, since its cheap and good. or should i say inexpensive and good. take a friend of mine, he got a 30D (before the 40D was released) and a 50mm f/1.8 and he's been shooting with that setup only for about 6 months now. Produced some amazing shots too!

As for the 50mm f/1.4, it defeats the purpose of getting an affordable prime lens. Might as well get a zoom to start with if you have the 600 odd bucks to spare.

50 1.8 is a good lens definitely you should get it, especially for its price. its also excellent for low light candid photog without a flash. the other advantage is it will start to teach you about the discipline required for shooting primes..

Notice you haven't bought a camera yet. There is a pretty ok deal in the Buy and Sell section. 400D paired with a Canon EF 28-105 F/3.5-4.5 USM. Maybe you can try bargain a little bit and then get an extra kit lens. Then you can slowly discover what range of lens you're more interested in.

Or you can just get a second hand camera body alone and one of those 18-200mm lens (sigma/tamron), and find out what range you like. Thats what i'm doing now, still discovering... :D

Think a second hand Sigma/Tamron 18-200mm without image stabilization should be around $300?

thengz, Yeah i saw that thread, but no warranty i abit scared leh. for the 18-200 is it USM ? cos mostly i will also be shooting sports or fast moving objects (vehicles etc.)

xunjas, thanks for the advice too! will be considering getting a kit lens first. today going down CP to ask for the price for the things i'm interested in, lens, bag etc.

to the rest, thanks for the advice! keep them coming. till end of month then i get camera, lens also end of month. cos no point getting lens now with no body to use with!

No it's not USM.

I suggest just stick to the kit lens and shoot first. Buying equipment is something that will enter every newbie's mind. There is no point purchasing something for which you have no specific purpose for as yet. It's like buying a computer but you don't know what you're looking to use it for, whether it be visual media, gaming or simple document work.

the usm will not help to stop motion. u need a fast lens with big aperture for this.

fast lens? what is fast lens? pardon me again. and yeah i think i'll get a kit lens first, and if i'm sure then i'll get another one. will be getting 50mm/f1.8 too. in time to come.

take your time then. u need lens with f/2.8 at least to capture stuff that you want to shoot. and most of the time have to be tele lenses.

Ya man, I was on a buy buy buy spree a few months back, bought 4 lenses. Then find that I don't use the lenses that often, end up selling 2 of them.

Not true. For outdoor sports, a f/4 lens will suffice most of the time.

Actually i was intending to get the EF-S 17-85mm IS USM Kit II lens but i decided to go for a Tamron F/2.8 17-50mm instead since some people told me F/2.8 was better.

You can't go wrong with starting with a kit lens (18-55) really. It's inexpensive, can cover a lot of different areas of photography for a beginner and at most you can just leave it in the dry cabinet after finding a lens that suits your needs the most.

If you want to shoot sports, then its a whole new ball game (pun not intended). A lens with f/2.8 or f/4 constant (ie a fast lens, double ie not very budget friendly).

I don't really think a 18-200 is a good lens to start with. I have no personal experience with third-party lenses but I do feel that someone new to photography should at least stick with an original canon lens just in case. Instead of playing around with a 18-200, you can either rent/borrow different lens to try and shoot with. Slowly explore. There's no rush to find your comfort zone!

big aperture lens like f/1.8 and lower... =)

slightly faster and better bokeh than some zooms but slower than primes..
