What is your favourite FX Portraits lens for D750/D810 ?

I have just browsed thru all the recommended portrait lens being posted here.

Please correct me if I am wrong, looks like all prime portrait lens for focal length above 135mm with large aperture (ie no smaller than 2.8) are all manual lens ...

Isn't there a large aperture auto focus lens above focal length of 135mm ?

Thanks

That's a pretty narrow range you've specified and on the longer end of the portraiture range. There are more options in the 85-105mm range.
On the AF side, the obvious choice would be the 135mm f2 DC Nikkor which is quite old but has a unique design (one of only two DC or defocus control lenses from Nikon).
There's a Sigma 150mm macro that can double up as a portrait lens but you did ask for the best.
Nikon's version is a little dated, and Sigma hasn't released an ART version in this focal length. Which leaves just Tokina and Tamron who have reverse engineered Nikon's AF and neither do a fast 135mm portrait as far as I know.

As the focal length gets longer, so does the actual lens length. The tripod foot moves the pivot point for connecting the tripod closer to the centre of gravity of the camera/lens combo so it balances better. You'll find most larger tele lenses will have a tripod foot.

You already have a 150mm equiv exceptional portrait lens. The 75/1.8 in your signature. It acts like a 150mm/f3.6 on FF but with the light gathering ability of an f1.8 lens.

Thanks diediealsomustdive,

this 200 F2 is too huge for me already:

My apologies, I should have specified 135 to 150, or lens without "that leg support" (not sure what you called it ... )

Thanks

You did ask for our favourite FX portrait lens :)

Now you're asking us to list out lens that are 135-150 without leg support ?

Any other requirements ? AF/MF ? Noisy/Quiet ?

Maybe not for the bodies you say...but this one is the heavy hitter.

Any lens 135mm and longer and f/2 or larger will be very large. It's called physics the smallest lens in that league with AF is the 135mm f/2DC. The only other lens fitting your spec is the 200mm f/2. You have a very exacting requirement. I use 85/1.8, 105/2.5 (manual focus) and 180/2.8. None in your exacting league.

Yes bro, my initial thought was to see what's everyone's favourite portrait lens

I just realised some of them are too huge for me especially those with legs

Any other requirements ? AF/MF ? Noisy/Quiet ?
Yes, preferably AF

Thank you & apologies for the trouble ...

Yes, the Olympus 75mm F1.8 has superb bokeh ...

Like you said, it is equivalent to 150mm F3.6 in FF. The bokeh ability is only at F3.6. Thus I was being "greedy", I was hoping I can get an autofocus FF lens at 150mm with a depth of field of F1.8 (or better) ... and that would have been great ....

cheers

I see ... thanks

So, the closet to my requirement is the 135 F2 then ...

After reading all the posting here, looks like the 85 F1.8 is a good compromise ...

Thanks bro

One more option. 105 f2 DC, the other Nikkor DC lens.
Again quite an old design but optically stronger than the 135 f2 DC with similar unique rendering.
If you value sharpness more, get the 85/1.8. If you value character more (very subjective I know), then get the 105/2 DC.

Have a look at this one of my favorite old threads on the internet.

Moderators I have no connection to that board and I am not trying to advertise it. The sole purpose is to illustrate and inform.

The 105/2DC is also easier to use then the 135/2DC (And cheaper slightly) I've even used it for random street shooting.

Thread-starter: As much as specs are nice to read (apertures and focal lengths), its more important to actually use the lens and give it a try. Everyone has different styles of shooting. Your best bet is to borrow from friends, or rent it to give it a go.

I think he has a lot of other gears too. Probably Nikon and Fuji too, just that he didnt put it in his signature.

Thanks bro, I did try some of the lens specified here at the shop.

But not too many shops carry the 135/F2 DC because they said is old lens liao ...

Thanks

Yes undergrd, you are correct.

But the reason I didn't put is because I cannot put. There is only a max number of characters allowed in the signature. So the rest I cannot add in because the limit has been reached.

I even PM one of the moderators to let me have extra characters but was told it was not possible. So I live with it ...

Anyway, I also just bought the Panasonic GX8 and didn't update this in the signature yet ...

Thanks
