Came to this forum recently to learn more about digital photography from fellow local hobbyists...
while great info can be sought and exchanged however more than often meaningful info/thread are polluted by non value added exchanges by some "usual suspects" almost all over the place in any thread started.

Maybe it is me being over critical... coming from other enthusiast forums of different field this is definitely area to work on if the moderators care.

Well i can probably just surf away and forget about it.. but i just wonder of this otherwise greatly forum...

Hi zag,

Welcome to Clubsnap and great that you find this forum informative and useful.

Before I start to address on your issue about non value added information been posted on thread started, I must clarify that I do not know most of the good people here except a handful that I met during some B&S and collection for MO session (feel really guilty about this). So as to speak, I am stating my view as a neutral party.

As to your point, I must first apologise as I too is guilty of posting non value added information in some threads at times. However, internet has given people their free speaking voices to post their views or to rant (politely) about some issues, but all these must be in line with the guidelines laid down by the administrators and moderators.

So far, my view of Clubsnap forum had been warm, cozy, informative and friendly. I believe this is so because of the well-balanced guidelines laid down by the administrators and moderators. Just imagine if the guidelines laid down are too strict or with rules that only value added information can be posted, this place will feel so tight and regimental. Users and newbie will fear to post anything or to air their views because it may not add value hence have their posts will be removed. In the long run, not many people will be motivated to post their views.

I have been to other forums before which I will not name them. Some of which are too strict will put newbie under moderation and every thread that you post will not appear immediately and have to wait for the moderators to approve it. Some others have the rules and regulations laid down there that are too lax and I see the problems of clones (multiple nicks), trolls and far worse non value added information and nonsensical comments posted in every thread. As compared to those in posted in Clubsnap, I believe that administrators and moderators are already trying their best to weed out all those that are totally un-tolerated one.

Looking at this issue from another point, if the administrators and moderators are to monitor every post as to see if the content is related to the title, this will be an enormous amount of job. For your info, the administrators and moderators of Clubsnap are running this website on a voluntarily basis which I think is unfair if we want them to scan through every post or threads and filter/remove those not relevant to the topic discussed.

I totally understand your point you are coming from, but I believe that in anything, it must strike a balance so as to achieve good user’s experience by giving user the free channel to air their view yet with guidelines to ensure that they are not over the board.

To me, if those post that really adds no value, I treat it as some coffeeshop talk that can be used to lighten up the atmosphere and mood here or to laugh about at times or even tag along the Off Topic (OT) talks. So try to take those posts that are non useful with a pinch of salt and take it lightly/joking coz’ you never know that the information you are looking for might be in those coffeeshop talk if you ask the right question to those “usual suspects”. On the other hand, you can simply choose to ignore them.

every family, company, community has it's own culture, even an online forum.

it's not a matter of being critical, it's a matter of accepting someone/something different from what you are accustomed to.

just like racism. most pple that are racist is becos they are afraid, or ignorant. go read up. :)

anyway hope u get wat u need from CS and either seive out the stuff you don't like, or join in the fun. :)

thanks for taking time to write up your point of view...
i am not so much referring to freedom of expression, go read some threads of particular interests, the thread pretty much from lens comparo discussion or camera model comparo opinion to chatting totally off topic. I realise the exchanges came from folks who are acquaintances offline and the thread becomes private chat exchanges.

well, i would just think of such as positive and constructive criticism and i am getting PMs from other users agreeing with me on the point i made.

free and easy is good, but if net etiquette is lacking and not observed by members, it will be just another forum.

i do get good info here and enough said. cheers!

ok got your point, per your point of view the culture in CS can be such that 20% real info in a thread and 80% can be anything under the sun discussed in the same thread totally unrelated and it is Ok coz it is CS culture.:bsmilie:

well.. i'm not the one to put figures anywhere, but if that rocks your boat, by all means. :)

take note, i'm not agreeing with your summary of CS, i'm just telling you that, in singlish, "it's like dat one lar". :)

Well, it doesn't have to be. It could be that the wishes of the silent majority are being drowned out by the vocal minority who are the ones doing all the OT. The problem with these OT is that they are not useful, merely idle TCSS.

I say leave the chit chat to Kopitiam.

Hi, i am a pretty new CS member, and i am already guilty of going OT in alot of instances. But to me the reason why i went out of topic is because of the friendly exchange of "polite insults" or even comments. Among alot of forums that i've been to, i think CS has alot going on. In instances when i plainly surf around for some info, and i stumble upon the OT and private conversations i just scroll down further to see if the topic gets back on track. If it doesn't then i'll just close it and look else where. Or if i have something i really wanna know or talk about seriously, i'll post an entire new thread and try to keep it on the topic on my own.

I feel that the reason why the CS forum is a very greatly used forum is exactly because of the warmness and willingness to share and openly talk about alot of things. On or Off topic. The moderators cannot do alot if you really realise, they can remind ppl to keep to topic. But ultimately it depends on the members themselves. Imagine a forum where everything is exaclty where it must be and must only be regarding that particular topic. Why don't we start an E library instead? and in case we forgot. Libraries too have their fair share of books being Out of place. So i think if all of us just Surf with a more open mind and be more receptive to how things run. I'm sure all will flow smoothly. If there is something that is really really ticking anyone off cos of the OT, you could just reply to the thread and remind others to try and stick to topic, i'm sure they'll oblidge. if not then inform the moderators. I'm sure they'll be more then happy to help too.

Just my 3 cents worth. hope this doesnt tick anyone off. =)

Cheers

Wah just join only want the community to change to suit ah...

Human mind is one of the MOST, if not the MOST complex system in this universe.

So there is never ending in OTs, bickering and so on. I have my fair share of bickering in CS as well. It's not really about blending in or not with a community.

Any community in this world there are bound to have disagreement here and there.

To the original threadstarter, I am sure you have a fair share with your friends and family on disagreement everynow and then.

When a community is built up of more than 3 people, there is a 99% chance disagreement with one another.

Sure this is a just another forum but a forum will not survive if there are no one surfing on the net, right? Not asking the threadstarter to agree with us but that's part of life.

Anyway, Welcome to Clubsnap and hope you will stay with us to learn and share with us.:)

I totally agree with Chris Lim's view. I think that his suggestion at the end is very good.

If you started a topic and you find that there are OT talks, maybe you can try to post your reply politely to remind other users to stay on topic, I believe by basic courtesy, others will oblige to your request. If not, just inform the moderators, I believe they will help you with it. Try to take things with an open heart and open mind then everyone will have a more pleasant experience here.

just my thoughts about CS,

it's not only a gathering for a common hobby of photography, it is a gathering of people. Ideas and information are exchanged and new friendships are made, of course there will be off topic comments. That's what makes this forum comfortable for me.:)

yeah it will be so boring if we keep talking about photography and equipments.

There will be no life in a photo if we only talk about it photography.

Tell you what, Zag.
As they say.
Put your money where your mouth is.

Start a Photo forum of your own and apply STRICT rules of your own to anyone who wants to post messages there. Allow only Photo information exchanges and nothing else.
Ban all OTs. Warn forum members everytime they do not post messages to your personal liking, as the Forum Owner.

If it flourishes, good for you.

While I'd like to take your post as showing support to the admin and mods of CS, I feel such is not the response the mods and admins would give to a new member who has given a suggestion for how the forum can be better run.

We welcome members to provide feedback and will constantly look for new ways to make CS a better place for photography enthusiasts.

Within our limits we have never adopted a "take it or leave it" attitude towards members' suggestions.

If you provide feedback to an organization that is part of your daily life, for example, National Library, MRT or event the government, how would you feel if the response to your suggestion is simply "start your won Library/MRT/country and run it using your way. If it flourish, good for you"?.

Sometimes, a fresh perspective is needed rather than that of the jaded mob who may already have been corrupted by the system or resigned to their fate.

Emperor's New Clothes syndrome?

True.

It helps a lot to have a different, new perspective/opinions on things. Otherwise things may go stale/boring.

Thanks for reading and responding. roygoh and all.
