They usually come in round cylindrical casing which is hardly sharp. The closest sharpness you can find would be on the TS-E 24mm which has a squarish section, but even that has rounded corners. Never been cut by any of the lenses before so I'm afraid your search is futile.

Canon don't sell wide anble lenses.

hey ..... some of u guys are just plain bad :bsmilie:

non-L - my money on the 20/2.8 WA

Looking to buy one here, but What is the best sharp canon wide anble lens ?

TS, it depends on your definition of "best" for what's best for you might not be best for the guy beside... It depends on:

1) Sensor size - Digital or 35mm
2) Range requirements - Primes, pseudo-primes, or wide range
3) Other "special" requirements e.g. aperture size, feel, weight... minute considerations but they matter

Like what they say, sharpness is a matter of perception... do explore your options before committing. Here're some to start you off...

FF
Canon 14L
Canon 16-35L
Canon 17-40L
Sigma 12-24

Digital
Canon 10-22
Sigma 10-20
Tokina 12-24
Tokina 11-16

List non-exhaustive...

*I'm assuming that when you say "canon lens", you meant lens that could be used on a canon body.

Pls tell your friend to get it checked.. ;) 35L is one of the better L primes around. Can't comment on the 10-22, 14II or 24II coz I've never tried them personally.

Strange thing was, we did bring it down, because i couldn't believe it myself. I also checked it on my bod and it was bad. CSC checked and said it was fine. Mabbie it was a lemon. :dunno:

I got the 11-16mm from tokina not too sure how is consider sharp but u can have a look at the image

Pardon me for asking, but isn't wide angle something in the region of 24-70 etc?

17-40 or 16-35 aren't wide, they're considered ultra wide angles angles ya..
and 10-22 is called super ultra wide angle...

LOL technicalities aside, I don't think 10-22 is sharp in any way, but it's the ONLY canon super ultra wide angle, so there's little comparison.

Personally for the 1.6 crop body, i think zooms wise, 17-55 seems alot sharper than both the 17-40 and 16-35.
Primes mah...I can't say coz I've not used many, but I was impressed by the 35L long time ago..

:) totally agree. Pair that with the tiny 35mm f/2 and you are set to go at small budget and lightweight.

TS wasn't specific, a very common malady of Singaporeans it seems. :bsmilie:

i'm gonna get a 17-40 based on its cost-quality effectiveness and my needs.

it is an L lens, build is good, barely visible barrel distortion and vignette on a 1.6 crop factor. great for general use like travelling, or occasional events (used with flash).

so the important few important questions you have to answer are:

1) what are your needs
2) what is your budget
3) what equipment you have now / going to get

17-40 on a 1.6x body..... er..... you were saying?

perhaps i was being really forgiving when i mentioned "barely visible". =P

if you're on a crop camera, just go for the 10-22. there's been much positive reviews about it, from review sites to actual users.

I intend to get one soon. ;p
