What if...

LOL go for 2nd hand and the above setup, minus the undefined manual lens, can be gotten for 6K, not too much above the budget actually.. ;)

bro... 6k is not too much above the budget of 4k? it's 1.5 times man!!! :sticktong

5d + 28-75 SP.

hmm.... i don't think the tamron 28-75 is going to do very well on a full-frame.. i heard edge performance (esp sharpenss) isn't very good... i use it on a cropped sensor so i don't suffer from that prob. maybe someone else could clarify...

but if it works well.. that's one good set-up!

Nikon 18-200 VR is not very good. Tried it with the D200...focusing is rather slow. Image quality is normal...EF 28-135 can beat it easily.

but the 18-135 definitely can.

its good if you stop down (at least going for that price) :bsmilie:, but if you shoot wide open, probably most of the corner will become "bokeh" on a FF.. :bsmilie:

you have a chance to start all over again to buy camera and lens...
you have only $4k to $4.5K to spend and wanted to cover a full range like maybe from 28mm to 300mm... what will you do? and state why... :)

don't forget the "else"......

Actually i dont see the need for "what if"

Most ppl here would have spent more than 4.5K(its not like an unlimited budget)...

If so, they why is your current setup not your ideal one with 4.5k?

If its not what you have then have you been making wrong choices all this while?

If you have been making wrong choice and you know it, then why have you not done anything to rectify it?

:bsmilie: :bsmilie:

maybe he's just trying to plan his set-up and has a limited budget.. so just wanna find out what the other's think.. but if that's the case, this thread isn't working...coz not many people are noticing the fact that he's trying to cover 28-300mm....

actually, the problem is we have no idea what he wants to shoot @ 300mm

xx-300f5.6 ($300-$900)
300f4 (~$2k)
300f2.8 ($3.5k-$7k)

They have VERY different prices, regardless of Nikon/Canon/Sigma/watever..

This also applies to the other focal lengths, but with a less dramatic price difference...

right... 300mm.

im still contantly finding uses for my 400L :bsmilie:

I would get....

Canon 400D ($1.8k)
Battery Grip ($175)
EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM ($880)
EF 70-200mm f4 IS USM ($1.8k)

Price: $4,655

Why? The 17-85 is sharp, wide enough, handy focal range, all with the nice benefit of IS.

The 70-200mm f4 IS... hmm. Enough said. We all know its good...

The battery grip for my big and cumbersome hands

The 400D for its fast AF, ICS, 9-pt, 10MP, better noise control and BIG LCD SCREEN! =D

IIRC The 400D is 1.35k when purchased as "body only".

I myself feel that 300D/350D/400D are very difficult to control. Don't have the dial button leh..so I start with my favorite body 30D.

30D(1.8k)
17-40(0.8k)
50 f1.4 (500)
70-200 f4 IS (1.7k)
-----
total 4.8k or just replace 50f1.4 with a 2nd 580Ex..

well.. are u really looking into getting that kind of range? like 28-200mm? maybe u should tell us what u're going to shoot, coz since u're on a budget, the telephotos aren't going to be of very high end, given that u still need money for your flash and filters and other accessories. the cheapest good one i can think of is the 70-200 f4L.. even that is 1K, on top of your 1.8k camera..

I'm also going to get a 30D soon, and i already have my Tamron 28-75 and the 580EX.. that's how i got the second set i recommended earlier.. i find it's much better coz the ultra wide angle will give different perspectives on landscapes and environmental portraits... i don't see the need for telephoto yet but that's just me.... it really depends on what YOU want to shoot..

for eg.. if u want to do macro.. the recommendations are going to be totally different...

sigma 17-70 + ef 70-200 f/4 IS.

This is exactly the same as I was thinking initially so all I've got to offer are a couple of interesting options for a <500 dollars extra instead of the 17-40 / 50mm combo...

17-55 2.8 IS (1.7k new)
24-70 2.8 L (abt 1.8k second hand)

Looks like the 70-200 F4 IS is practically the law these days for enthusiastic amateurs with spare cash - looking forward to getting mine in a couple of weeks !

Cheers

When talking about focal lengths (or effective focal lengths), you will need to bear in mind the 'crop factor' of your camera. The 30D doesn't have a full-frame sensor. It is smaller than a film negative. The crop factor of your camera is 1.6X. Hence, any lens that you put onto your camera will seem to be longer and your field of view is narrower. A 70-200mm lens will give you effective field of view of a 112-320mm lens.

Bearing that in mind, your choice of lens setup will depend on what you primarily shoot. With the camera out of the way you have $2.7K left to spend. If you buy the 30D second hand you will have even more money for your lenses. Make your money go even further by buying second-hand.

If you must cover the focal length of 28-300mm (in 35mm equivalent) on your 30D, decide whether you use the standard range more often, the medium telephoto range more, or if you use both just as often. What sort of subjects do your want to photograph? Rule of thumb is to spend most on the lens that you will use most often. Don't spend more on a lens just because you like it, or because you think you will use it.
