what are e things & functions that a full fledge dslr can do while our m4/3 can't?

Wow! What cam is that?

EP-2, it's black colour and can already attract attention, if white I'm sure will be more. I believe is because it's unique.

Does a full-fledge DSLR have a greater dynamic range compared to m4/3 due to the sensor size? :dunno:
This could be a more significant difference between the two in the case of IQ.

You can compare sensor dynamic range via http://www.dxomark.com/

They do a comparison of all the major cameras. You can select the Panasonic G1 to represent the EP1&2 and GF1 as they all use the same sensor. If you compare the m43 to say the D90, the Dynamic range is not that far off but in other areas it lags behind a little. Basically the G1 Sensor (according to Dxomark site) is roughly performing the same as the Nikon D70 (which is a camera I bought many years ago), albeit that m43 sensors are 12MP compared to Nikon'd D70's 6MP sensor.

So in a way, technology has over the years certainly made m43 sensors a viable alternative to the DX/EFS stable of DSLR sensors. Think about it, size wise you have the performance of an older DSLR that fits into a small bag or pocket with interchangable lenses, v cool! For best IQ though I would try not to shoot beyond ISO640 (this is just my personal preference).

D70 is a DSLR from donkey years ago. Don't we all agree that at the speed of improvement of DSLRs we should use bodies announced in the the same year or year before to make comparisons.

If you read my post I compare it to the D90 first but for a sensor-to-sensor equivalence in capability it appears to be closest to the D70 which I own and can comment safely on first-hand. My point is that the sensor is roughly equal to that of a D70 DSLR albeit with a MP advantage.

The engineering reality is that 4/3 still a somewhat smaller sensor compared to DX/EFS sensors, but what you can really appreciate is how quickly 4/3 sensors have caught up to the DX/EFS 'standards' given the size disadvantage.

I don't know about engineering because I do not make cameras but how about a comparison with the more recent models like the D5000 or D300? I think it will be a better comparison. Can help thread starter to make a better informed decision.

Its all in the DXOmark.com website which I already elaborated very cleary for the benefit of all. And basically I compared it with the D90 first which is a current camera and more relevant in terms of price range (with the 18-55mm lens).

Bear in mind that this is a sensor only comparison and should not be the final decision maker when buying the camera in this context. All the cameras mentioned can do a good job at the hands of a determined photographer.

a good comparision would be a dslr within the same price point, so Nikon D5000 or Canon 450D, Sony A350 would be suitable models?

Sure you can compare price but strictly speaking the sensor in the D5000 and D90 are virtually the same. You can check it out at www.dxomark.com

Functions wise, that would be a different story. I am only commenting on the sensors aspect of this long thread.

ok, so far we have:
1) faster FPS
2) Higher DR
3) Lower High ISO noise
4) optical VF
5) IQ to some extent, depending on needs

other tangible differences?

Negative:
-you will lose some fitness level cos you will not be carrying heavy equipments.
-you will have to now make a decision to shoot video or photo (DAMN! what to do?!?! now must decide before press button).
-you will have to downgrade to smaller drybox (you have sold off your big dslr and big lense) cos it is too empty now.
-you will have less chance to win during a photographer-brawl cos the other guy use bigger cam and can bash you with that big camera.
-you will look less pro. your boss dont want you to take photo during d&d anymore. now you are free to party and you are at a loss cos during previous years you cannot (lost the dance skill already) cos keep on taking photo during d&d. Your friends / family will not ask you to take their wedding photo for free anymore. They will ask other guy who use big big camera.
-you will not look like a tourist (according to some adv).
-you will have to answer constantly "how come no flash" (for ep1 & ep2 only).

Positive:
-you will gain some bonus level on attractiveness, and you can bring it into parties (unlike cars which you have to park) and let it become a conversation piece (esp after applying that gold sticker) and girls apparently try to pick you up according to some people who own one.

Man, see how many negative stacked against positive, and you still want to buy m4/3 camera?

For me I will wait until one come with swivel LCD. May be from fuji so I dont have to answer to olympus vs panasonic m4/3 fanboys, much like how I end up with olympus 4/3 dslr to avoid nikon vs canon fanboys.

went to the museum with my EP-2 hanging around me.. and an angmoh looked at me and said. Wow is that a PEN? Its so cute, I wanted to get one. He has an E-3 though..

so is he trying to pick you up ! hehe
