Went Wandering in Colorado

Struck a conversation with the new neighbours, a couple form Germany
Who was down here to attend a friend's wedding
So they began 13days earlier and did the drive starting from Vegas all the way down
Did Zion the day before, Mesa Verde before reaching the Great Sand Dunes
They didn't look tired at all  He was up and about, trying to catch the sunset
Not wanting to be bested, hurrah for kiasuism, I grabbed my camera off the nightstand too

My propensity for idiocy + procrastination should no longer amaze anyone
Had 'planned' to do star trails, but forgot to save the guide, instead relying on the blurb at the Lodge's website
Wifi available here
Oh Frustration! With a spotty connection, getting disconnected after 3-5minutes at random
In a touch of encouragement, a documentary of Flight U571 was playing on the History Channel
Mimicking their doggedness and resolve, my finger on reconnect and reload
(only the next day would the lightbulb go on to search for an app to do offline browsing)

Although dark, cars were still traveling into the Park and I left it late to venture out alone
Granted with the nasty fall, she wasn't keep on tramping around in the dark
At 11.45pm, I drove out to the road leading within, pulling over by the side, rubbing my hands against the chill

It was naturally bloody cold outside, and unbelievably black
The wind rustling up monsters, spectres and shades waiting to claim another for their dark needs
The mind thinking of the very real snakes slithering in the tall grass, mountain lions and wolves

Struggling to avoid being thwarted by the car automatically lighting up like a carnival
Everytime I stepped in, the headlights, compartment and dashboard lights would go on
Yet I fretted, I couldn't possibly stay outside

Placing my rig 15 long strides away from the ill effects of automobile lights
I rushed back to the sweet safety and comfort of the silent car,
Blinding myself by squinting at a brightly lit small screen
Repelling attacks with assault towers in a bid to kill time
More than half the time elapsed, when a distant low rumble woke me up from the mind-numbing rote
My mouth now dryer than the strongest Vermouth, I swallowed rapidly, uncomfortably
I looked up and hoped
My heart sank, as two bright spots appeared in the rearview mirror
I watched aghast as the old jalopy sputtered its way into the Park

Nice work on the trail on # 32! I kinda like the bit of glow near the horizon. Was it taken before complete darkness ?
I think the bit of lights that invaded ur private composition worked pretty well
As one of the photog on another forum mentioned, star trails are easy, the composition is tough.
How I wished I can do some similar shots. . I might try letting the exposure go longer to get longer trails

Thanks, I had wanted to try Floris' method of multiple shots then stack either using PS or startrails.de
http://www.naturephotographers.net/articles0509/fv0509-1.html
but forgot that my remote didn't have that function ;p
Also pre-focused and set on tripod before I set off ... then bumped the ring when I took it out of the car grrr

This was 38m, had wanted to go for 45m-1hr but gave up, cold, dark and increasingly bored
The Long NR second black was also agonizingly long

It was completely dark when I was out there, I can't explain the glow
From what I can remember there shouldn't be anything beyond the mountains
The closest towns as in <14>, Mosca and Alamosa, were way behind my position

She decided to keep the TV company, and I had wanted her to rest
Having DirecTV is such a time waster!
Don't watch much of the telly back here but the hours just fly by when it's on there
The Food Network as we're preparing to head out and Jon Stewart + Colbert before we sleep

Climbed the dunes myself, though right off the bat, admitted that Star Dune, the highest point, was out of my reach
The first going was rough on the feet, rocks, pebbles and debris, wind swept and dumped away from the dunes I assume

This couple and I started out the parking lot together. Twenty minutes or so later, they were there, I was here!
Felt like I was in a survivor type show, tripod extended resting on my shoulders with my arms draped over it like a scarecrow
The sun was warm but the wind cold
Just repeated to myself I gotta reach the base of the dunes, to feel the sand,
Kept my head down and my feet a-shufflin'

The hike up was painful, and painfully slow
Ended up using my tripod as a walking stick
Though a stick is less accurate, a rod to plant and drag the rest of my body up more so

Not visible in the bright sun, the clouds rolled in and revealed patterns in the sand
When the wind blows, the heavier darker magnetite stays, streaks of light coloured sand remain
Found this out amongst the many rather cool interactive displays at the Visitor Center

GReat read, your thread has always been. I agree with Ryan the star trail worked. the light trail worked too, i think.

Thanks emlee, honoured you'd say that.

And when it gets dark, it gets cold, the sand too desperately holding on to the last vestiges of warmth
Funny really, hot one moment and then the clouds sweep over and it feels like almost twilight
Which isn't welcome considering the wind would tunnel its way through holes and openings
To quick-freeze the sweat that's puddled up beneath your clothes, stopping me in my tracks
Giving me the jumped-into-cold-shower best-imitation-of-Andy-Samberg's-J***-in-my-pants face every time

Oh but this turned out well :)

Yup I think this turned out pretty well, and added abit more depth than # 34.
Love the skies and the bit of lights on distance hills that seems to outline the foreground

Thanks Ryan, lots of creative opportunities with the shifting clouds and light
Have just read that fall season is simply amazing in Colorado with swaths of yellows, reds, oranges and greens
And it's happening right now!
Sigh, if I tio 4D I would...

Took plenty of stops, on the pretense of taking photos
But panting heavily, my hands were shaking
arms barely able to lift that black box containing not glass and mirrors but tiny anvils
Needed to pace out my breaths, avoid hyperventilating
Had to ration the now seemingly tiny bottle of water
Dead weight I had said before starting out, now like liquid gold

*w/Topaz B+W since they've got a launch promo now

If it's not obvious by now, I went ape-crazy in the dunes...

The sun bringing out the colours, like golden flax

Nice work. The skies must be really blue and deep. Out of interest, what are those little shadowed things on the mid right ?

Thanks Ryan, the skies change very quickly but overall it was deep blue, the clouds come and go, can see them floating above overhead, like a giant alien mothership casting its shadows on you
Oh had someone ask me the same on Flickr.
I was reading up on the dunes a few nights ago (faintly remembered some exhibits at the Visitor center): www.nps.gov/grsa/naturescience/dune-types.htm
I think it's when the structure can't hold the weight of the sand and it falls down, much like a landslide, creating a depression of sorts. It's more obvious on the next one <42>
Wish there was some sense of scale too, the dunes are huge but it's not particularly obvious from the photos.
Still contemplating, I like the textures but totally smooth dunes sound pretty awesome too, though that would mean figuring out how to smoothen them, currently beyond my PP abilities.

Pushed contrast for a harsher look
