We love our manual focus Nikkor lenses!

I do not have the Ai 105mm f/2.5, so cannot comment. Years ago I used one to compare with my AiS using F-801 and Fujifilm 100 and could not see any difference, so I did not pursue the course.

But the photos above are clear to see. I think the AiS version is clearly superior to the rest of the lenses, although the E75-150 at f/5.6 could well be a little sharper than the AiS version.

If you look at the CA and overall soft photos wide open, perhaps KCCHEW's CA issue for the AiS lens is caused by coating that is compromised?

I have the AiS 80-200mm f/4 and Ai (late verson, square window at rear) f/4.5, but did not test them due to lack of time. That will be another "tale" for another day?

And as this thread is about our well loved manual lenses, no AF, AFD or AFS 105mm f/2.8 Micro-NIKKORs are included.

I had an AF 105mm micro briefly, and it had the same obvious CA as shown in your prior AIS post especially at the rims of highlights as well, only to be significantly improved in the AFS 105 micro.

Don't know about you, but I find the CA for the 105 AiS to be quite acceptable, only at max aperture and high contrast when the CA is evident to me, and pixel peeping at that.

I have the AFD 105mm micro but it is on long term loan to a friend, so can't tell. And I use my AFS 105 micro almost exclusively in my underwater rig - almost except when I go insect hunting. And OT liao, the AFS is nicer, but so much fatter.

Bro, thanks so much for the tests. I've no idea why the AIS I used to have had more CA than yours, but I guess it's a case of sample variation. My AI copy's CA performance is about the same as your AIS. But I noticed that the AIS was sharper wide open at long distances (over 100m) as compared to the AI. But at portrait distance my AI was the clear winner.

That could be the reason why a secondhand shop tried to sell me the Ai 105 even though I already have the AiS lens, and that was back in 1988-89. I think I paid $365 for my AiS new in 1985, and the secondhand shop wanted $320 for the Ai lens. Didn't really make sense to me then. So I turned it down after testing - could not see any difference. But I am not sure if we are really splitting hair here. And since I don't use my MF lenses much these days (and already have 3 MF 105mm f/2.5 and 2 AF 105mm micro (AFD and AFS)), all these are but academic.

Anyway enjoy your AI 105.

Found this late model Ai 80-200mm f/4.5 and had to buy it to try out. Looks like this:

Lovely. Diediealsomustdive, you are really giving these oldies a good workout

Thanks guys, the lens only looks like that, not the actual lens. I assure you the copy I have is much more beaten up, well used but not really abused.

And unfortunately while underwater I am already busy enough, can't worry about MF  :embrass:.

Crazy bokeh balls ;p

Nikon 85mm Micro PC.
Tilted shifted stitched pano. The fall off at the extreme corners of shift is a little crazier.
