Great quality for a cheap lens.

@Ansel: I tried converting some of my shots to B&W, and the results were quite nice. If I do keep this lens, then it's time to put my stockpile of B&W film to good use.

@azzurri and diediealsomustdive: Thanks for the reminder. I remember seeing some AI'd copies on display at the shop, so I'll see if those are any better. One reason why I got the AIS was for the built-in hood. Other than the CA, this lens is really sharp even when wide open, and the CA is more or less gone at f/4 so chances are I'll still hang on to it.

you still can it the lens ai'd if you can find the ai kit for the lens. but if the ca is gone by f4, then i think it's very much still usable. the 105mm f2.5 is a real awesome lens. i don't use it as often as i should but when i use it, it always surprises me with what it can offer. enjoy your lens and post more shots from it! :)

Hi!

recently was looking for a good, compact tele that wouldn't break the bank. the 80-200 f4 AIS wasn't up to the standard optically, and the i couldn't get my hands on the 75-150 series E (plus i was worried about the coating) so i settled for the 50-135 f/3.5 AIS which seemed like a really nice range, and would go well on a DX body if i did events. anyway in short, its proving itself a fantastic lens save for some distortion and abit more flare than the primes. but completely useable at 3.5 and superb from f8

So I went back to the shop to compare my 105mm f2.5 AIS with their AI copies. It turned out that mine had the most chromatic aberrations, so I swapped for a late-production AI. It still has aberrations wide open, but not as bad as before. It kinda feels weird using a lens older than me...

Some samples taken over the weekend:

I actually picked up a 35mm f1.4 AIS before the 105mm, but I didn't have that much time to use it until recently. Very nice lens that's sharp at wide apertures with an interesting glow effect wide open. Bokeh is pretty decent too.

I do not have the Ai 105mm f/2.5, so cannot comment. Years ago I used one to compare with my AiS using F-801 and Fujifilm 100 and could not see any difference, so I did not pursue the course.

But the photos above are clear to see. I think the AiS version is clearly superior to the rest of the lenses, although the E75-150 at f/5.6 could well be a little sharper than the AiS version.

If you look at the CA and overall soft photos wide open, perhaps KCCHEW's CA issue for the AiS lens is caused by coating that is compromised?

I have the AiS 80-200mm f/4 and Ai (late verson, square window at rear) f/4.5, but did not test them due to lack of time. That will be another "tale" for another day?

And as this thread is about our well loved manual lenses, no AF, AFD or AFS 105mm f/2.8 Micro-NIKKORs are included.
