Wow, these bring back warm & nice feelings... had this Nikkor for over 20 years, served me so well, superb IQ & ever so reliable, every shot especially of pretty girls a great shot! This photographer's lens is like a sniper's rifle :heart:

Go for the D700. I did, all because of the Nikkor 85mm. Top up about <1k & you can get an excellent preowned D700. Nothing beats the perspective of the 85mm for portraits, half/full body shots, IMO. Sorry to poison you :bsmilie:

The sharpest lens of mine,sharper than my AF 50mm f1.4 a lot.The disadvantage is sometimes too far for portrait in my DX format camera. :cry:

I used one from focusingscreen.com (a company in Taiwan).

The screen I used is one cut from an authentic Nikon focusing screen for film slr. works perfectly.

a split focus screen cost about $60 from orient photo 6th lvl on simlim. i love them cos it lets me know when my AF lenses missed focus and i have to refocus. if you decide you don't like it anymore, you can just sell on bns for almost the same price.

as for the spot metering issue, this will occur with all split focus screens when the maximum aperture is about 4.5 or smaller. the split prism blacks out, but center weighted is usually not affected..

Those are the not-so-good ones... They are significantly darker and they are the ones that will give you more problems with spot metering. I put one of those into my D40x. Works, but spot metering gets a little whacked sometimes. No problems with large primes though (which is 99% of the time I use spot metering).

On my other camera, I got one from focusingscreen.com. The particular piece I got was cut from old stock of Nikon K3 screens (focusing screen for FM3A). Nice and bright, the screen is such a joy to use! :thumbsup:

thats the one tt will go in my d700/d3 when i get one. another one im considering is cutting a minolta acute-matte screen to fit my d200. but haven t gotten one yet.

Use MF lens only when you have the time. I use about 3-8 seconds to focus usually without the split focussing screen and accuracy only about 70%.

AUTO FOCUS makes life easier when trying to capture moving subjects like in sports/wildlife/children photography

agree that whether it's easier to focus is subjective... but for me, the focusing ring of manual lenses is very much smoother than af lenses

Obviously it's more difficult to focus... but it's the analogue feel that get pple hook to MF lens... nonetheless, if one practice and use MF lens long enough, they can focus fast and accurate enough to rival AF lens...
