We love our manual focus Nikkor lenses!

Hi guys and girls,

Between the 24 and 28mm f2.8 AIS, which lens would you choose?

Would the 28mm sharpness, less distortion and close focus ability win your vote?

I'd vote for the 28mm. I've not shot with the 24mm before, but have shot with 2 copies of the 28mm f2.8 AIS and both are top performers in all 3 of your criteria. Colour is top notch too, even without ED elements and Nano coating. Only problem is that the FOV is quite weird on DX.

Check out Bjorn Rorslette. My observations matches most of his reviews almost all the time.

Wide-Angle Lenses For Nikon 'F' Mount

Oh I see. I guess I'm wrong then, apologies for the confusion haha.

Yup, going to do some low light shooting later haha.

On a side note, you could try shooting with your 50mm f2 as the only lens for a day. :) To me, this lens has one of the most distinctive renderation and contrast out of all the Nikkors I've used so far.

Haha; you had me there for a while. I tried to blow up one of my images in Capture NX2 but of course found it couldn't be done. Learned something there as well.

Sure thing, some days shoot with only one particular lens to exercise one's creativeness. It is said that a photographer deals with the art of inclusion, while a painter deals with the art of exclusion.

I really like my 50mmF2. There was a time when it was the only lens I had; and for a few years (not just "for a day") I shot with only that lens. So it is not only good enough to keep but also for sentimental reasons.:)

Enjoy your low light excursion!
Show us some shots when done. - of course if they are done with manual focus lenses.

i've used both side by side, and the 24mm gets my vote. it matches the 28mm for pretty much all the the 3 categories you brought up, and has a more dramatic perspective; but the second point is abit more subjective. between the 2, chose the focal length you prefer to shoot at; either one will be fantastic. i chose the 24mm cos i prefer to work with that focal length.

Wide-Angle Lenses For Nikon 'F' Mount

Thanks for your replies. So both are good but I think 24mm might be too wide for me.

Brought the 35 f/2 AI to the SKC Dog Show on Sunday
It's a great single-lens solution for me
Takes me awhile to get used to the long throw though after mucking around with the 50 f/1.2 AIS for long

I was also using my 50mm f1.2 extensively for the last couple of months and then just switched back to 35mm. Wow, 35mm feel so wide, not complaining though.

Another one that I like.
Good exposure. How did you do it, and what were the settings? Without flash?

I am also amazed that some of the dogs are not trying to run away or jump down from their tables.

Do show us more pics from the show.

btw just to ask the bro here.. I have a 55mm 2.8 nikkor.. how much can I sell it for?

The quick search for B&S section can easily get the actual market price.

Thanks

On f/2.8 and 1/100 I think
Nope, no flash, wouldn't work anyway for a scene in a hall this big
Was rather bright inside
The dogs are well trained and used to grooming I suppose
Didn't take many photos though, or those I did were with AF lenses

Went to Night Festival at SAM last night, and here are some shots taken there. All are taken with D300s and the 105mm f1.8 AIS mostly wide open. The 105mm is really a great stage lens, and the feeling is damn good when u nail the focus wide open. :D IMO the glow from this lens wide open adds to the atmosphere of the shots.

Saw another photographer using a 180mm f2.8 ED AIS on a canon body, diden get to speak with him though.

Converted in viewNX, no sharpening at all.

Natalie Hiong performing. Great performance, her vocals were quite good.

Wow!
Your shots are really sharp. It is not easy with manual focus. I can understand the feeling when you get the focus right. You feel like punching the air.
What shutter speed and ISO were the shots done with?

Thanks. :) ISO 800-1600, shutter speed about 1/200-4000.

Yeah, a spilt focus screen is a necessity haha.
