Singapore couple honeymooning in New Zealand die in car crash
By Serene Loo/Julia Ng, Channel NewsAsia

SINGAPORE: A newly-wed Singapore couple, on their honeymoon in New Zealand, died in a car accident last Friday.

The accident took place near Mangaweka, some 200km north of New Zealand's capital Wellington.

The couple, both teachers, were driving in their rented car when it collided head-on with a truck from the New Zealand Post.

The Singapore couple and the truck driver all died on the spot.

27-year old Ho Poh Yoke and 31-year old John Lim Chih Hong were married on 6 November.

They'd left for their honeymoon in New Zealand on 5 December, planning to stay on there till Christmas Eve.

John was a physical education teacher at Nanyang Junior College for the last four years while Ho taught PE and mathematics at Peirce Secondary.

Those who worked with the couple were deeply saddened by the tragedy.

Richard Chew, principal of Peirce Secondary School, said: "Miss Ho is a very loveable person, well liked by her students, her colleagues. She's very hardworking. She'll always go beyond the call of duty to help her students in their work. Very pastoral in nature."

Tan Hui Miang, vice principal of Nanyang Junior College, said: "A very careful, very good team player. A committed young man. He always volunteers himself for jobs beyond his job scope. All these years, whenever we have urgent matters, John will volunteer himself."

The couple's family members are in New Zealand to bring back the bodies of their loved ones. - CNA

I was shell-shocked when I learnt of the news from the 6.30pm Chinese News Bulletin. All the three of us have known one other since our NIE days and we were in the same FCBC-cell network then, particularly John whom we spent a year as buddies in the same cellgroup. What really broke my heart was that this fatal accident had happened soon after they had tied the knot in November and before my trip to China, I did toy with the thought of catching up with him but it just slipped my mind ...

To those of us who are of the same faith, can I request that we pray for peace and healing for the grieving families that they may be assured that John and Poh Yoke are now resting in the eternal, loving arms of the Lord and that the families will receive favours for their future comings and goings.

An important lesson learnt:
Don't procrastinate ... tell your loved ones how much they meant to us now; begin each day with the purpose of ending it with no regrets and no remorse ...

My condolences, Adam. I'm also in the teaching service and although I don't know them personally, I feel for your loss. God Bless.

a pity. but things still can happen despite doing our best to stay safe.

my then secondary school where i studied in, lost Mr Aw Long Fei who died in thailand while coincidentally on honeymoon with his wife, in december 1992.

I share in your grief and sense of helplessness after reading the tragic accident that happened to your friends. I can imagine the pain of their parents which just a month before was filled with joy and happiness. All their hopes are completely dashed. There were no last words, no time even to say goodbye. Their void and emptiness will be filled with tears and sorrow for many days to come. I can only pray for them that God will comfort them at this time and heal the wounds that has been so wickedly inflicted on them. Only God and time will heal...

So sad to hear this.
My deepest condolences to their families and friends.

My condolences.

The photographer who shot my wedding also shot their wedding. Coincidence.

My deepest condolences, Adam.

You take care Adam...

God bless them... and their families

My deepest condolences to their family .......

Thanks fellas; I think the bereaved families and their pupils need the emotional support more than anyone else.

I've also just realised how insensitive I was; was on the MRT when I read off (from another commuter) a similar article of this incident in another paper when I realised that the third casualty, Peter James Harland the truck driver must have loved ones who are grieving for him too.

Let's keep his family in prayers too! :)
