As seen on ST forums:

This is the reply which I received from McDonald's:

"Thank you for your interest in McDonald’s Doraemon Lucky Charms collection.

As part of our ongoing efforts to provide customers with exclusive collectibles only available at McDonald’s, we brought in a Doraemon collection that consists of 12 designs. With Valentine’s Day coinciding with the 1st day of the Lunar New Year, we decided to include a Cupid Doraemon in the series. We seek your understanding that the Doraemon Lucky Charms promotion was never intended as a zodiac collection.

We thank you for your feedback and wish you a prosperous new year.

Yours sincerely,
Veronica Tan

You can all e-mail them to ask them why they keep on fibbing.

trying very hard to dig a way out.

if McD wan valentine's day, then left the all the animals out, y drop the hint of zodiac.

have the doraemon cat do different poses of cupids lah.

Hmmm I remembered not too long ago. Behaved or not... Politics and Religion are strictly off limits in clubsnap. Moderators have the rules been changed?

The rules have not change. It's just that since poster are more resopnsible nowadays so no need to lock.

Before thing get worse, can some upper level do something to this thread.

As most have said, things are OK what.

Sorry to TS for the OT.

OK, McDonalds have not replied to my rebutter to their reply, yet.

Let's see if they will do the same as SingPost and admit their mistake.

We excluded Doraemon “pig” design in the collection with the intention to be sensitive to the Muslim customers. It was also decided to include the “cupid” design to commemorate Valentine’s Day which coincides with the first day of the Lunar New Year. We seek our customers’ understanding that it has never been our intention to be disrespectful towards any religion or culture.

We are humbled by this experience and have taken note of all our customers’ feedback, so that we can better serve everyone in future.

So they were trying to be sensitive to Muslim but they did not think it was necessary to be sensitive to Chinese?

Can we have a consensus not to post anymore words related to religions and race. Else more people will get uneasy as they read. It is very clear what McD has done and the audience they hurt, so no iteration required.

From now onwards, just talk about new updates with respect to the topic.

But before I end my final statement, here is some knowledge. Zodiac in context to the news is not about religion or belief, it is an iconic info. By asking a person what is your horoscope is, is a polite way of asking how old are you. Zodiac is associated with geomancy but remember this, it was not the topic or the whole thing, just plain Halal and Zodiac boar toy. The tiger decor and coins your see for CNY are commenorative purpose and not for praying. In fact Chinese don't pray to Zodiac, the tiger statue you see in temples is not Zodiac which I will not elaborate as it will violate the directives. :)

Look back to the posts about 'reverse racism' in the ST forum or do a Google search.

why should this thread be close?

nobody is bad mouthing any religon.

looking through this thread has made us understand islam better and that our muslim are not unreasonable & overly sensitive like those clowns in the marketing dept in mac think they are.

i hope more people will read this thread.

it is the lack of such discussion that creates miss-understanding.

I think that to be on the safe side, this thread should be close because honestly from what I see most are just giving their own theories on Islam. I call for the mods to close this thread before things get out of hand. I dont understand why in the past threads were close within one or two posts but this thread can last so long and at so many points it was so close to breaking out in argument. Parts on how the decision is insulting to Chinese etc... well I dont see how statements like this can help us understand Islam more. i see it more as Chinese thinking how they want their rights to be respected more than that of Muslims.

Facilitating civilized and open-ended discussions between opposing races and religions is often the best way in which a deeper understanding of each other's racial culture and religious practices can be cultivated in a multi-racial society such as ours.

Rather than bury your head in the sand and assume all is well with the world, it's best to acknowledge that problems exists, make a stand and correct the stereotyping and misunderstanding which other race or religion might have of yours rather than allowing it to degenerate into discrimination in which your future generations have to deal with in time to come if the problems continue to be ignored as if it does not exist.

what u c is different from what i c.

1) i c clarification on our muslim friends stand on this issue.
2) i c clarification on the common miss-understanding on dogs being a no no to muslim.
3) i c chinese standing up to tell mac d "u need to respect not only 1 religon making such decision, u need to consider others culture and religon".

i m not sure how u interprete my (3), but from my understanding, none r saying that their religon / culture r more important than the other.

the only one i c stating one is more important than others is ur comment above.:dunno:

If you think some part of Islam has been mis-understood then please post something constructive with proper reference so we all get more understanding, and can refer to that too. Avoiding discussion will cause more misunderstanding.

I also dont think more chinese want their rights to be respected more that that of muslim. We want all to be treated as equal.

McDonal should have probably give an option of either getting a cupid or doraemon in piggy costume.

I wonder who is their target customer for the toy?
Probably a muslim will not buy the toy as it is more a chinese customs.

Hi, just in case any people misread the long thread, nobody has said that one race is sensitive over the other. Everyone (all races) have agreed that McD is wrong, which is why everyone in knowledge of their race and culture chips in to explain where McD has gone wrong.
There wasn't any argument within here and nobody needs to go very deep into religious/culture knowledge to know the issue. Unless you have a different view to offer, we are in all ears to listen but my analysis is, there won't be any deeper info to overrule the understanding.

In summary, there are 5 groups of people in the public.

1) Those who wanted the doraemon boar to complete the set. The collector's agenda.
2) Those who felt that mislabling of Zodiac is wrong. Mostly traditional Chinese and the scholars of field.
3) Those who don't care because they don't even know what Zodiac means.
4) Those who felt wronged bec they are misunderstood from the McD action and public.
5) Those who joins in the ra ra for fun.

I keep my reservation on this statement. Merchandising no longer belongs to a faculty. When we think only elders will buy a product, it ended up young generation are the bigger buyer now. That is marketing power. :)

....

.... Probably a muslim will not buy the toy as it is more a chinese customs.

why has a thread about toys become come this
