it seems that everywhere in the world, some religion must not be offended, lest there is violent backlash a'la boomz, while others can become jeering stocks. why is that?

why do they insist of offending other ppl just to appease a few intolerant religious [CENSORED] [CENSORED]? this is totally illogical. if they want other ppl to respect them, they must first have respect towards the others...be it cultural or religion. so far, all i see is other ppl accommodating to a fault the whimsical whims of these so called religious types...is this truly the price to pay for a peaceful life?

Its move in omitting pig character from zodiac animal set irks Chinese

FAST-FOOD giant McDonald's has stirred up a controversy by omitting pig characters from its latest toy promotions.

The pig soft toy was expected to have been part of a 12-character Doraemon set depicting the animals of the Chinese zodiac calendar. Customers wanting the toy would have to pay $2 on top of making a food purchase.

But McDonald's decided not to include the pig toy to avoid offending Muslim customers, and had a Doraemon Cupid toy in its place instead.

The move has upset Chinese customers keen on collecting all 12 toys in the series. One of them, staff nurse Daphne Koh, 26, said: 'I was born in the Year of the Pig and would have collected the whole set. But without the pig, it makes no sense for me to do so.'

Retiree May Liaw, 55, who had wanted to buy a set to decorate her home for Chinese New Year, said: 'It is strange to have Cupid in place of the pig. The set is incomplete and I am not interested in individual pieces.'

Various online forums are also abuzz with discussions on whether the fast-food chain has overreacted.

1. chinese for omitting pig
2. muslim cos they still include dog
3. vegetarian cos none of them are vegetables
4. extremely religious christians cos mcdonals is promoting superstitions by selling chinese zodiac characters
5. satanic worshiper cos none of them spew out blood when stabbed on the sacrificial altar
6. doraemon collectors cos mcdonalds is making them fat - they have to collect all and must eat lots of mcdonalds to buy the toys

next year macdonals will not sell any more toy, end of happy meal.
kids will complain cos they got no more toy from mcdonalds.

lets remove dragon cause its christian's satan
lets remove mouse cause its a pest.
lets remove tiger cause its deadly.
lets remove chicken cause its edible
lets remove rabbits cause they are pets
lets remove snakes cause some are poisonous
lets remove everything rubbish cause it affects all different kinds of ppl

Strictly speaking, McD is not suppose to sell toys because they are F&B. Years ago there was an issue the McD with the law because they sell too many toys which is why they coupled with meals now.

Many people may not know that the zodiac was used by ancient China to help people remember the birth year, Vietnam and Korea (just read) have them too. Which is why it is so well known among Chinese family all over and every very significant in CNY. The new generation only knows them as cartoon from movie. But can't help it, modern education, civilization and evolution has will erode the history as time goes, it in inevitable.

What i find surprising is that singapore is so sheltered, surrounded by muslim countries north and south, have a good partnership with Brunai, another muslim country but yet most population especially the young chinese do not understand the muslim culture well.
By the way I am Chinese, born in Indonesia, non Muslim.

I admit to not having paid much attention to the issue until today's Straits Times ran an article on it. Then this Cupid thread here suddenly rang a bell.
As the newspaper article has rightfully mentioned, many Malay/Muslim individuals and organisations have expressed that they do not feel that it offends them. And several have mentioned that the pig as a toy is not a problem at all.
I do think that this time round McDonalds has made a big mistake. I personally am disappointed in them.
But still, I hope they would learn from this.
My opinion.

The zodiac Boar is widely used replacement word for past years and so is Ox over cow. Sheep and Goat interchange in the western text.

So if the word Boar and a doraemon that don't even look like a pig is consider sensitive, I cannot image McDonald's impression of our local Muslim community as extreme beyond logic. McD have completely undermind the mentality of our local Muslim intellectual.

Wonder how Taiwan and China forum will think if they read this. Better don't let them know, I felt ashamed.

I have always been very neutral to expectation like costume, song, marriage, practice, food, words and behaviour bec there will always be things of taboo among communities. If McD staff simply said the Muslim don't like it and is replaced, I am not upset. Because fear of losing Halal license .... huff puff.
